A New York pizza chain wouldn’t dare make pies at its new location in Africa without its secret ingredient — New York City tap water.
Famous Famiglia, which is set to open a pizza parlor in Accra, the capital city of Ghana, will take the extreme step of shipping Big Apple H2O across the Atlantic Ocean just to make the dough for its pies.
“I want to make this as authentic possible. I want to have the exact same pizza as in New York City,” said Dan Isaacs, co-owner with his brother Douglas of the new franchise shop scheduled to open on May 1.

A guy in Garland, TX made wonderful pizzas. Then, they suddenly were substandard. He proudly told us, “Yeah, I was shipping in dough from NYC, but I can save some money by making my own dough!” He was out of business within a month.
That will last exactly as long as it takes to go through the first 100 gallons of water, get the publicity and move on to local tap water from a green hose behind the gas station.
It will make the pizza so expensive no Ghanan will be able to afford it.
Coca-Cola has over 900 bottling plants in the world. That’s because at 8lbs a gallon, water is outrageously expensive to ship.
I used to work for a company that made a water based concrete additive. It was 90% water and delivered in tanker trucks Their shipping radius was 200 miles.
New York has wonderful water from the Croton Reservoir. I had to tell my brother - fresh back from 30 years in LA - not to order bottled water at our restaurants - it is considered touristy.
Pay for a good chemical analysis of the NYC water then duplicate it.
Much more economical and makes more sense.
I’ve talked to people in the pizza business in NJ.
They are solicited all the time to expand elsewhere in the country, particularly in Florida.
He said the same thing, the water in Florida is incompatible with the style of pizza and expectations of customers.
That said, the Gino’s pizza chain in Denver was pretty close to NY-NJ pizza, but not quite there.
California is a wasteland of pineapple and ham on pizza lovers.
If they did a chemical analysis of NYC, they would be forbidden from selling it by the health department.
Maybe filter it and then just go pee in it at the sinks in the restaurant, just like New York?
When I do travel medicine counseling I tell my patients that regardless of what hell hole they may be in, Coke is safe to drink. Just don’t put ice in it and make sure the cap hasn’t been submerged. Id so clean it off with friction.
It probably has a high concentration of SMUG in it.
They want the rat droppings and cockroaches too?

The concentrate they ship around the world isn’t even a syrup anymore- still too much water. It’s a dry powder.

You should also tell them that if they suspect anyone tampering with it, they should pour the contents into their toilet. It will clean all the stains in the bowl. Why pay $5.00 for toilet bowl cleaner from the store. That stuff doesn't even work. Buy COKE for $1.99/2-liter and get the toilet clean without even scrubbing.
In China even Baptist missionaries drink beer.The local brands like Tsing Tao and Harbin are very proactive about their quality control and the very low 2.5 % alcohol content means it is hard to get drunk but is enough to kill a lt of bugs in the bottle.
