Almost two weeks after buying a brand new computer, it's still giving me fits.
They one they sold me is an HP with an AMD processor. Other than having trouble with Flash on Firefox it's been doing great, until Sat. night when, while watching a movie on YouTube, the computer suddenly froze up completely and rebooted. Then the next evening, while watching another long video on YT, it happened again.
An online acquaintance has talked me into taking this back (I have one more day to do so) and switching it for a Dell with an Intel processor for practically the same price (though they'll have to order it). I'm going to try to spend the day taking most of my stuff off this thing and then return it tomorrow. I still dread the set-up, after having just gone through it. Why they didn't sell me that other computer to begin with I don't know.
And now more trouble . . . for the past four years I have subscribed to AVG TuneUp and have been automatically charged each year at this time. I attempted to cancel my subscription but whenever I logged into my AVG account it told me I had no subscriptions . . . then this morning I see I have been billed for it!!! And I had no opportunity to cancel. Fortunately I've applied for a refund already, but this is an awful lot of trouble to go to.
I'm beginning to wish I'd never gotten a computer to begin with twenty years ago. You can't live with 'em and you can't live without 'em.
I'll be so glad when all this is over and some sense of normalcy returns.
you have a lemon- it happens
switch to the dell if you can get if for the same price
I dont buy anything buy laptops anymore but I have always been happy with Dell
Buy Dell.
Or Apple, if you can afford.
My HP which I bought in September completely died last week. I’m now working on my Dell which is about 10-15 years old. It’s ancient, causes lots of problems, but is still working.
There’s a reason people pay more to get Apple products.
HP is problematic. Dell’s service is much better.
While I have avoided reboot/lockup issues for quite some time, I don't recommend the above to anyone unless they are willing to live with the possibility of struggles during a rebuild.
Get ready for a bunch or people to tell you to wipe the operating system, install Linux and download bit torrent to stream movies and tv for free.
You wouldn’t Havre any trouble pulling that off would you?
As for the AVG charges, either get a new card or have your bank block future charges from that vendor.
I’ve had my HP since ‘09 - got it for a contract at MS, used as a workstation for 3 years daily. Now its at home.
Once a drive crashed, otherwise never a problem.
Just a hint with the AVG subscription. Whatever credit card the subscription is charged to, dispute the charges, and have a new card with a new number issued.
Sometimes cancelling the card is the only way to break those automatic renewal deals. It usually happens to me when my credit card company sends me a new card with a new expiration date.
this worked for me....

It was Dell's amusingly called "tech support" that drove me to Apple in 2003. I've never looked back.
Uninstall Firefox; install Opera.
www.opera.com
How much memory do you have? 8Mb, 16Mb? Turn off all other
apps when you’re streaming. Streaming video is beyond hoggish.
I have 2 Win-7 Pro 2009 HP industrial/office grade PCs, running just fine.
Since it’s an AMD processor, it could be overheating.
Go with the Dell. If you are having problems this soon they will only continue.
Did you try resetting the PC to factory specifications or formatting it ?
Mac.
Billionaire Dell still makes pcs in the USA
You mention it froze up twice while watching youtube videos, If the computer is a laptop maybe the video processor or even the computer process is heating up and locking up. Whether that is the problem or not, you might want to get a laptop cooler or what ever you call them, and if you get one try to get one that has a few fans that can be moved around so that the fans are cooling the hot spots on the back of the laptop. I don’t know how many brands sell this type but the one I got is called Cooler Master, or at least that is the name on the front of the laptop cooler facing me at my desk. Highly recommend it.
