Let's get this out of the way, right up front this period correct, widebody, musclebound Mustang takes just a tick under ten seconds to reach 60 mph. Don't worry, we have the feeling once you read up on this uber-rare Mustang, you'll still want it as badly as we do. If you've got some cash lying about, you can even buy it for yourself, courtesy of our friends at Bring a Trailer.
On behest of Ford, McLaren Engines from Michigan developed the swollen 1980 Ford McLaren Mustang M-81 with full-blown production plans set for a 249 unit run. In some regards, this can be seen as the first SVO product, despite never achieving a production run past the initial 10-unit prototype phase.

175 HP? LMAO.
Breathtaking, is what it is...
I bought a 1986 GT in cash with a really good commission check from selling pay telephones. Remember those things? That was a fast car!
Party on Wayne.
It looks like a Pacer.
That’ll leave a mark!
And to think you can always park within walking distance of the adjacent body-panel!
Is there a Commodore Vic 20 in the back seat?
Wow is that thing UGLY.
I’ll stick with my two old Beautiful stock 1978 and 1980 Z-28’s with their 145 HP our whatever it was 350’s...
Bump
A hair faster than the ugly, underpowered miserable Mustang II.
Yea those were nice cars.
I used to date a girl around that time that worked for a guy that sold/rented payphones...
More like ""I live in a trailer".
$450 bucks per phone and I just signed two shopping malls.
that, my fellow freepers, is exactly what the overzealous EPA and CAFE standards did to cars in the late 70s and early 80s. Probably the worst years for car performance. Don’t look at what the Corvettes of those years were doing, because it wasn’t pretty.
Sounds a little above average for an early 80s turbo four. Sluggish acceleration though; turbo lag must have been high.
Dodge Daytona Turbo Z from the same period had about 142 horses and 0-60 in 8½ seconds.
Those lovely 230-hp 350 V8s were designed to somehow make the Buick Regal Grand National seem impressive.
Except the Pacer will work as a greenhouse when it’s on blocks in the front yard.
I’ll put it this way - my 2.0 liter turbocharged Ford Escape SUV is faster to 100 MPH than the 1977 Corvette.
Almost like getting a free GT.
Man you must of had quite the smile on your face...
