Samsung mobile recovery suffers blow as Galaxy Notes 'catch fire'

The recovery in Samsung Electronics Co Ltd's (005930.KS) mobile business suffered a blow on Thursday as reports of exploding batteries forced the firm to delay shipments of Galaxy Note 7 smartphones, and knocked $7 billion off its market value.

Investors drove the stock to two-week lows after the global smartphone leader told Reuters late on Wednesday the shipments had been delayed for quality control testing, and that shipments to South Korea's top three mobile carriers had been halted.

Faults with the new premium flagship device could deal a major blow to the South Korean giant, which was counting on the Galaxy Note 7 to maintain its strong mobile earnings momentum against Apple Inc's (AAPL.O) new iPhones expected to be unveiled next week.

I have a note 7. The other day it got so hot that buttons on the side where quite hot to the touch. No idea why. I had to power down and let it sit for 10 minutes to cool down.

Have you been using the charger & cable that came with it or “aftermarket” products when charging?

I’ll stick with my Note 4. Not having a removable battery is a deal-breaker to me.

.....Not having a removable battery is a deal-breaker to me.

Exactly why I don't have an iPhone.
I'm not a heavy user , but would like to have a high end phone. One I could have for numerous years.

Obviously the battery would be expendable and need replacement in a couple years.

That’s just silly. I’ve had Apple products for over ten years and never once had to change a battery. Before I upgraded to my current iPhone, the old one still held a charge all day long. My original iPod from 2003 still has the original battery and will run for hours.

The “sealed battery” is a non issue. And if you really wanted to, you can get the tools online to open the case for a few dollars. But why would you want to?

Was it charging at the time?

The chargers Samsung provides give a very fast charge, but they also cause the battery to get quite hot. They call it “adaptive fast charging”, and the device will put out either 9 volts or 5 volts, depending on what it decides to do.

You’re probably better off to charge from a normal 5 volt USP source, like a desktop computer, or a 5 volt only charger. You get no excessive heating that way.

I own a Nexus 5X and updated to Ver. 7.0 (Nugat) on the 29th of this month. With this new OS version the battery lasts for almost 3 days.

9 volts, seriously? It’s my understanding that LiIon cells get damaged when charged above 4.2 volts.

The sealed battery is an issue if you like to stay out in the field and use up two or three batteries. I purchased a Note 4 for $345. Note 7 is $856. Specs are similar. Batteries and chargers for older models are dirt cheap.

Yeah, it says that right on the charger. What happens internally to the phone is unknown, so I don’t know what they are actually putting on the battery.

Like I said earlier, if you had to change one out on an Apple, it can be done quickly enough and they sell the tools cheap online.

The sealed case for a cellphone is a good idea. Keeps out moisture, dirt and grime. Makes the product more reliable in my opinion. I believe that the Samsung phone I had a few years ago also had a sealed case.

I’ll keep my Note 3, simply love the Sans Disc feature for holding music and photos of my Grands and Great Grands. And I can put in as large a Sans Disc as I want.

OK, perhaps the charger transforms the voltage down to increase the amps.

Obviously the battery would be expendable and need replacement in a couple years.

Not so obvious. The original iPhone I bought more than nine years ago was still going strong as a hand-me-down phone among various family members up until we retired it as a phone a year ago last March, when we gave it to my three year old granddaughter to be used as an iPod touch, where it is STILL being used. That original iPhone is still on its original battery which takes 80% of its original charge and doesn't need recharging for 24 hours. Apple intends for its batteries to last for a five year life span. This one obviously is beating that!

They are also fairly easy to replace.

Wan’t going to pony up a grand after accessories anyway. It’s Axon 7 or OnePlus 3 decision time when the Note 4 rolls over.
