The Times has learned that Reginald, the greyhound that was attacked in a recent incident has passed away.

A mixed breed pit bull jumped out of a vehicle from the parking lot of the Bodine’s Market on South Main Street, attacking both Reginald and his owner Lisa Matthaeus.

Reggie suffered deep gashes to both sides of his neck. The skin on both of his legs was taken completely off. Lisa was also injured trying to intervene, suffering broken fingers and a severed tendon.

“Reggie” was a retired Greyhound racer who was adopted by the Matthaeus family.

The attacking dog, Rocky, was seized and ordered to be put down.

All pitbulls should be shot and their owners imprisoned.

There is not much difference between a tiger or lion and those dogs.

Exactly. You might as well argue that a grizzly bear is only going to attack because the owner didn’t raise it properly.

I have two mixed breed pit bulls. I consider owning them the same as owning any weapon. When in my back yard they are secured and I go out with them, when we go for walks they are in harnesses and on a leash and I would never leave them unattended in my car.

We have had two houses on our street recently burglarized and they are in my home for protection. I am a responsible dog owner and I have always owned large guard dogs. They have both been properly trained and I have had them since they were tiny puppies.

Our veterinarian rescues pits and trains them and she has never had an issue with one of her dogs. Hundreds have passed through her facility.

I don’t think I belong in prison. I haven’t done anything illegal that I know of.

Man, that makes me sad.

The grey hound is adorable.

I despise pitbulls.

The owner of the damned beast should be put down too.

Do the world a favor and get German Shepherds instead.

Another gift that keeps on giving, brought to you by the wonderful dog-fighting /chicken-killing Hispano-psycho culture. IIRC, there were no pit bulls or chicken fights on the streets of America prior to the 1980’s, which heralded the arrival of the southern Mestizo hordes jumping the border, and filling our emergency rooms with their pregnant women delivering anchor babies. What the hell. There just HAD to be a society somewhere that would eventually make the Romans appear civilized in comparison. Damn, it’s US.

And I know someone that had non-pits jump out of his vehicle to attack the solid bronze cheetah that sits in the intersection in Winston, OR. You’re not likely to change minds on this subject. I’ve had pits and mixes. Treating them as weapons is a good idea.

Unfortunately, a population stupid enough to elect Obama isn’t smart enough to know how to handle a pit-bull as well as you. All these pit-bulls in the hands of idiots are a danger to the community in general. Penalties and liabilities need to be high for these dogs.

I actually looked at German Shepherds and Dobermans, which is what I’ve had in the past. We actually had an issue with the Doberman being overprotective at times. She snapped at someone who approached the car once.

These puppies needed rescuing and our vet trained them herself. After almost 2 years, no issues at all. These two are much more friendly than the Doberman by far, but don’t tell the burglars that.

Both breeds are man-made to be the best at what they do. Greyhounds are freaks. Wouldn’t have one. Wouldn’t condemn those that do, either.

Any weapon in the hands of idiots is a bad idea. Unfortunately, we can’t fix stupid.

I don’t have an issue with high penalties at all. I agree with you. This dog will lose its life and the owner loses his pet. I think that is the ultimate penalty.

I have heard that grey hounds are very sweet dogs, but I’ve not ever met one up close.

I’ve seen a couple being walked by their owners, and their musculature is just amazing.

Does your vet’s last name just happen to end with the letter “z”? How about yours?

Yes, Dobermans can be like that, but they can also be very friendly. Shepherds are similar.

My lady Shepherd is the kindest, gentlest most submissive dog, but she also takes guarding the house very seriously. But if we get set upon by another dog while walking, I’m the one who has to do the fighting while she tries to run away. I’m on my own.

Other shepherds are incredibly fierce and can be quite scary. I’ve met a few of those in my life. Definitely a dog that needs to be respected.

But look I can’t fault anyone for rescuing dogs that needs rescuing. Thank you for doing that.

What ever happened to the idea that it is not the weapon but the intent? Want to make pitbull harmless? Stop breeding them with over aggressive breeds like Chihuahuas, eliminating the race.

No, no “z”. Hers ends with a “t” and mine with a “p”.

Vet grew up in a small town here in Texas and she’s been around animals all of her life. She saves all she can :)
