Look what Trump has already done to effect legislation, since he announced. Sanctuary cities, Kate’s Law, muslim immigrants...etc, etc have all been brought up via various bills.
One statement or Tweet from Trump on this will set the tone. Trump leads, others follow.

This is politically sensitive tactics. If Obama nominates an extremist, or someone with a scandal then the Republican Senate can do nothing and wait for next year.
But if Obama were to nominate a highly respected centrist then it would be political suicide for the Republican Senate to not approve that nomination.
I’m not sure what type is such a respected centrist. Jane Harmon? Bayh of Indiana? Maybe an alleged moderate Earl Warren Republican?
The Republicans need to play this carefully. Speak softly and carry a big stick is my advice.
The Media is going to be running a "0Muslim Needs To Replace Scalia" story 24/7/365 until the election.
The New York Times will have 6 Front Pages every day covered with stories about how this needs to get done.

Ted Cruz is not destined for the Supreme Court. His naked ambition screwed him out of a top job in the GW Bush admin and its going to screw him out of the presidency and the SCOTUS. He will stay in the senate as long as the Texas voters abide him.

I quite agree that Ted Cruz on the Supreme Court would be an ideal post for him and for the country if he fails to persuade on natural born citizen.
I question whether Donald Trump ever has any allies, he has toadies and enemies and those who cooperate at his convenience but, as Churchill said of the Huns, he is otherwise at your feet or at your throat.
