This is politically sensitive tactics. If Obama nominates an extremist, or someone with a scandal then the Republican Senate can do nothing and wait for next year.

But if Obama were to nominate a highly respected centrist then it would be political suicide for the Republican Senate to not approve that nomination.

I’m not sure what type is such a respected centrist. Jane Harmon? Bayh of Indiana? Maybe an alleged moderate Earl Warren Republican?

The Republicans need to play this carefully. Speak softly and carry a big stick is my advice.

Trump is not stupid enough to voice support for any person to replace Scalia at this point in time.
