BOZEMAN (AP) - Montana State University is trying to put a value on dinosaur bones after state auditors said they need it for insurance policies, despite opposition from Museum of the Rockies' dinosaur experts who say it's unethical and dangerous to treat scientific research like it is marketable.

I gotta believe there’s a market for dinosaur bones.

But value for insurance is something different, yes?

I associate you with fossils, not personally but posting.

Other articles do put a great deal of emphasis on science not wanting to associate w/insurance.

This area is rich with fossils.

Then again, museums have FANTASTIC wine and cheese tasting fund raisers... (even in MT)

Lots of “open” land that’s closed off owing to old bone repositories.

Some land owners have found entire beasts and donated them, some are still partially exposed.

It seems that the news reporters could do reports weekly with daily follow ups instead or morbid reports of highway deaths.

Auditors found that the $64.5 million market value that MSU reported for its museum collections for insurance purposes — which include other collections such as vintage appliances — didn't have supporting documentation.

I am a certified bone appraiser and would be happy to offer my services to the University. My appraisal fee is a very reasonable charge of ten cents per pound. I guarantee my work which is independently verified by Frederick F. Stone and Associates located in Bedrock, the county seat of Cobblestone County, Nevada.

Sorry kid, you ain’t got a chance. I’ve seen pictures and video of the kids that do the field work (for free, or at least part of their studies...)

WHOOT

(and then there are the ones who serve the trays of hors de hours at the soo soo things at the museum)

‘Course, maybe it’s just the person behind the camera/editor?

You’re correct.

I prefer searching out and finding the disused railroad lines.

There are some fantastic tunnels, bridges, cutouts etc here...

That stuff of standard gauge is well documented, but fun to go see. Mines are documented too and have rails sometimes.

Why be interested in buying insurance when the State is full of more examples to dig up? Finance the U through bone sales (after getting the DNA sequenced.)

What are they supposed to do? Dig up some guy who traffics in illegal black market dinosaur bones to tell them what it’s worth?

I was in a fossil shop last week. They had some very amazing fossils. There were price tags on every one of them.

And the market can’t be all that big. I mean, really. Fossils just set around. They collect dust. No BlueTooth. A real dud.

Well, the fossils just sit around except for at night at any museum where Ben Stiller is a security guard.
