Police say that Jason Callahan, 19, from Myrtle Beach, S.C., was reportedly following the Grateful Dead when he was involved in a fiery car crash and killed instantly. He was burnt beyond recognition, and since his family never reported him missing, no one claimed his remains. All he left behind were the tickets, and a letter addressed to "Jason." The only identifying information: a star tattoo, according to a New York Times account.
The paper lists a number of amateur investigators on Reddit, Websleuths, and Facebook, who, armed with these few clues, sketches and a composite image of the victim, were able to piece together enough to build a profile over the years and spread the word. The last breakthrough came when an old roomate of Callahan saw the photo. After Callahan's mother, Margaretta Evans, saw the story online, she... identified her son and the news soon went viral.

Listen to the river sing sweet songs....
The identities of the blacks who assaulted the tourist on the steps of the Baltimore city hall were eventually uncovered by bloggers working from the West Coast. The internet strikes again.
I wonder if Jason is grateful?
Can’t walk you out in the morning dew today.
The only reason why the poor young man went unidentified all these years was because his own mother refused to file a missing person’s report insisting he had just decided to not have contact with his family. She only filed the report very recently.
bump
The son hit the road as an adult and there is nothing law enforcement would do in a situation like this if the mother would have reported the son missing.........
I hope you're not trying to blame Her.........
... to rock my soul.
There was a "mystery" tv show segment about this, some time ago, same information -- but with the poignant addition of a note he had in his pocket, a first name and phone number of a girl he met and probably never got to, uh, date.
While I’m not a Dead Head, I’m impressed.
“I hope you’re not trying to blame Her.........”
Sure I am. Not for his death, but for the fact he went unidentified for all this time, yes.
Remember. . . “No one ever thought to report him missing because they thought he wanted to be missing,” his half-sister, Shannon Michelson, told The Associated Press.
So apparently no one EVEN TRIED TO REPORT HIM MISSING FOR THE LAST 20 YEARS.
I know someone whose son deliberately disappeared and that man searched for him and discovered he was at least alive but didn’t want to contact anyone in the family (until he finally did so years earlier).
This family DID NOTHING for 20 years. Look at the articles about the case online. The family never went to police, never filed a missing person’s report, never hired a private detective, never did ANYTHING until the mother saw an article about “Grateful Doe” online this year and that sounds like it only happened because his roommate saw pictures of him online and might have contacted the mother.
BTTT
I work with many people who walk away from their families. Families work with and try to find missing members, but after a number of years, they give up. This is not unusual.
Someone who continuously leaves and breaks off communication is not missing if they don’t give indication that they are coming back.
