How a history of eating human brains protected this tribe from brain disease
Washington post ^ | June 11 2015 | Sarah kaplin

The sickness spread at funerals.

The Fore people, a once-isolated tribe in eastern Papua New Guinea, had a long-standing tradition of mortuary feasts — eating the dead from their own community at funerals. Men consumed the flesh of their deceased relatives, while women and children ate the brain. It was an expression of respect for the lost loved ones, but the practice wreaked havoc on the communities they left behind. That’s because a deadly molecule that lives in brains was spreading to the women who ate them, causing a horrible degenerative illness called “kuru” that at one point killed 2 percent of the population each year.

The practice was outlawed in the 1950s, and the kuru epidemic began to recede. But in its wake it left a curious and irreversible mark on the Fore, one that has implications far beyond Papua New Guinea: After years of eating brains, some Fore have developed a genetic resistance to the molecule that causes several fatal brain diseases, including kuru, mad cow disease and some cases of dementia.

My wife and I were discussing the proper techniques of butchering deer since it's hunting season. Even if deer CWD is not currently a known issue in alabama it's important to know the risks.

Prion diseases are of a special interest to me since the seem like the perfect stealth bio weapon in my opinion. Came across this article and thought I would post it. There are many making links between Alzheimer's, dementia, cronic wasting disease and mad cow being tied to a variety of prion diseases. I'm interested in the science aspects and there are many here with research / PhD level knowledge. Please post any thoughts or theory's on this area.

Can’t Congress just pass a law against Prions?

that probably explains why you never see a zombie with that disease.

the perfect stealth bio weapon

I don't know how hard it would be to produce in quantity but it would definitely be bad. It wouldn't show up for years and its incurable.

we would become a nation of vegetarians.

They couldn’t, you have to have brains to practice the habit, they’d have starved to death. Oh wait, that’s exactly what you meant! LOL

I’m interested in how eating brains stopped dementia.

I fear that my well publicized head injury will cause early dementia or alzhiemers.

I already search for words alot more than I did before.

Plus I hope science rock and rolls for the troops with head injuries.

The latency period for this disease may be very long. Some think more than 60 years.

So even if no animals are sick it could still be a present in the animals.

Didn’t stop so much as weed out the weakest.

Essentially, the folks with susceptible genes died off.

theyd either have starved to death or have eaten the brains.....and eventually become immune to dementia....which could have taken place... by the latter part of the 20th century...or thereabouts

we dream.

Don’t try to eat a liberals brain. You’ll starve.

I have read that BSE/CJD has killed in months. Some forms may be slow yet others were very quick. There might be some fast acting proteins that can’t be sterilized, can be uptake into plants, live in hospitals ....

Odd little thing. It’s not even a living organism like a virus.

I already search for words alot more than I did before.

But do you eventually find them? I usually do, but sometimes it takes a few moments. My meningioma tumor was abot 4"x 2½" x 1¼" when removed 5 years ago. I don't know that I've forgotten words, or just misplaced them.

Except some prions can be introduced to the soil and taken into plants. I doubt the deer in the northern Midwest are eating each other’s brains but yet it’s spreading into others states
