In before the “Arlo and his dad were Leftie pinkos” replies.

Thankful we are a nation that not only tolerates but embraces different political views, otherwise FR would not be here.

Besides, its a true story of law and order!

Arlo was a major lefty....he became a small “L” libertarian and a registered republican some time back...

and for what it is worth (and he still has leftist leaning but)...

Guthrie has since become a registered Republican. He endorsed Texas Congressman Ron Paul for the 2008 Republican Party nomination, and said, “I love this guy. Dr. Paul is the only candidate I know of who would have signed the Constitution of the United States had he been there. I'm with him, because he seems to be the only candidate who actually believes it has as much relevance today as it did a couple of hundred years ago. I look forward to the day when we can work out the differences we have with the same revolutionary vision and enthusiasm that is our American legacy.”[18] He told The New York Times Magazine that he is a Republican because, “We had enough good Democrats. We needed a few more good Republicans. We needed a loyal opposition.”[19] In the 2016 election, Guthrie expressed disappointment at both political parties, noting that he personally liked Bernie Sanders despite numerous disagreements over policy and that while he admired Donald Trump's ability to run without major fundraising, he found Trump's demagoguery to be appalling.[20]

About once a month, Guthrie posts short writings to the Announcements area of www.arlo.net, often expounding libertarian themes.

I believe that the early 60s were an interesting time when the people who became hippies were really interested in self-determination, self-sufficiency, appropriate technology, craftsmanship, and bold new ideas. Stewart Branch and the Whole Earth Catalog really captured a lot of fresh thinking which could easily be considered Libertarian. Later, many of these people were early adopters of the new computer technology.

But after about 1968, that whole movement seemed to shift hard Left and they became dangerous rabble-rousing Marxists.

I think Arlo may have gone back to some basic roots when he became more of a Libertarian in his old age.

Even if I was a senior NCO in the army I loved that movie. I don’t care if it was anti-war. I also enjoyed Mash.

I found the mid to late 60s disturbing... having been the son of a Marine who fought in Guadalcanal and Bougainville I was a pro US kind of guy who relished in the fact that we fought wars to the finish (never really paid much attention to the Korean debacle)....then LBJ and to a lesser extent Nixon decided we needed to fight a war in a tiny country in perpetuity. no endgame...major rules of engagement no win just send in troops to die.

I thought after 9/11 it would change...no deal. we used smart bombs where our fathers would saturation bomb .and level whole cities.

We won WW2. (well we should have gone on to destroy Russia afterwards...but we Finished what the Japs and Krauts started)

at this point in time I would strongly recommend that my 3 boys NOT go into the service under this administration or any GOPe administration.

I remember when a local FM station changed from a country music to a rock and roll format. Giving us exactly one non country music FM station.
Now that’s considering there was still two country music stations left over.

They advertised for a month so country music listeners wouldn’t raise Cain, they did anyway.
I guess country music fans think as slow as they listen.

At exactly 11:59:30 on the appointed day the station finished the last country song it would broadcast.
The overnight DJ, Uncle Joe Bob, came on to say goodbye as he couldn’t abide rock and roll. He didn’t like anything but country music and Amazing Grace.

He did use the last seconds of his broadcast career to introduce the new overnight DJ, some gal named Periwinkle something or another.

Periwinkle something or another said hello and played the first non country song on an FM radio station in our area.

It was Alice’s Restaurant.
History was made.

Uncle Joe Bob was never heard on the radio again.
He spent his remaining days making the best illegal likker in these parts.

Periwinkle something or another played music overnight for three years then moved with some fella to the old gristmill.
They spent most of their time nekkid so they had plenty of kids running around.

These events happened exactly as I have said.
I think there’s a song in there somewhere but I don’t have the time.
I have to catch a train.

The fella that sold me the ticket said The City of New Orleans will get me five hundred miles before the day is done and that’s just about where I need to be.

We became hippies because we liked the company. Now we’re the selfie generation because we like ourselves. Actually this is BS.

Yup. There was a piece back when the TEA Party was still holding rallies, I forget on which site, which was written by an old hippie from the early 60s phase, which was addressed to his “fellow hippies” to make the point that “Tea Party values are hippie values.”

Glad Arlo returned to his roots as libertarian if that’s what happened. (Maybe saw the light and moved right is a better description. After all, don’t forget his father really was a full on Communist.)

Being able to sing/recite the whole of “Alice’s Restaurant” was for years the one attachment I retained to the 60s counter-culture. I’m not sure I can do it any more now that I don’t have kids at home who request it at least annually. I do still get knowing laughs from the occasional student when I give out teaching evaluations and tell the students “have fun filling out the forms and playing with the pencils”.
