If the zombie apocalypse happens, scientists say you should head for the hills

If - or when - the zombie apocalypse comes, those of us in big cities are in trouble, according to research presented at the American Physical Society March meeting on March 5, 2015.

Starting in a big city like New York or Atlanta would mean you are basically screwed from the start if the epidemic had already hit there, according to Alex Alemi, a graduate student at Cornell University and part of the research team.

You are much better off starting further away from people, they say, which gives you a better chance of avoiding infection. Ideally, you'd escape to an almost empty region like the Rocky Mountains.

"I'd love to see a fictional account where most of New York City falls in a day, but upstate New York has a month or so to prepare," Alemi said in the APS press release.

Authentic disease modeling

Alemi and colleagues used standard disease models to estimate the zombie infection rate around the US, assuming that humans would need to be infected by a zombie bite (of course). Also following standard protocol, zombies travel only by walking and wouldn't die naturally but would need to be "killed," presumably with a well-placed blow to the head.

Essentially, they used a realistic model that's very similar to the way epidemiologists calculate the spread of other viruses, but using fictional parameters unique to zombies. They did make some assumptions, including a transportation infrastructure collapse. It's hard to imagine airports staying operational for long in such a scenario.

Or worse, inbred cannibal hillbilly ZOMBIES!

You can just see them tottering along, carrying
cane poles and cases of Budweiser, their cheeks
packed with Red Man, muttering,
“Chittlins, chittlins!”

LOL ... Who was the retard that researched this?

I am sure the zombies who were a part of this study are listed by name in the bibliography.

Even without anjy zombie apocalypse you are better leaving the cities as soon as you can. Ferals/Zombies...what’s the difference?

I saw brainless mobs at University of Missouri and Yale. Not sure if zombies or just dummies. Neither group has much self-awareness and they tend to form herds. The latter group will cause more damage in the long run.

I’ve barely survived seven years of the zombie apocalypse that brought millions of dumb voters to the polls to vote for the cool black guy twice.

I’ll be so glad when this stupid Zombie fad ends.

I am a fan of The Walking Dead and other zombie-related media, and I totally agree with you. It has to run its course at some point, right? The vampire thing faded thankfully.

Think of crazy thinking as infectious ...if you have a low immunity (you don't apply critical thinking to filter) you “catch” ever crazy thing the group comes up with

Yes I tend to agree. As my friend Ed always says “when the ice storm comes you either be at the bottom of the hill or you be at the top of the hill.”

You already need to be outta Dodge before the SHTF.

Some seem to think that they can just “bug out” and go live in the woods. As one Freeper told me, “It ain’t rocket science”. No it’s not but how many really know how to go and live in the woods for extended periods? I have seen youtube video about how easy it is, showing someone shooting a few squirrels for supper. How long do they think the squirrel population will last? How long do they think even the deer population will last? Some even seem to think they can live on wild plants. Maybe so but I don’t think most realize how difficult it is to survive on purely plant sources for food even if you have a supermarket next door and plenty of money. The best chance would probably be where there are a lot of feral hogs that can be trapped but it is not all that easy to go out and kill wild hogs and the hogs can have you for supper if you don’t know what you’re doing. Anyone can make it for a couple of days but it takes some real knowledge and ability to survive for months in the wild. For me shelter would be less of a problem than finding plenty of food and clean water. I can build a survival shelter with what can be found lying around in the woods. I learned that as a boy.

The zombie fad preservers because, more than anything, it's SHTF drama; how to survive in a world where all the comforts of modernity are gone and the social rules that held a modern, industrialized civilization together no longer apply. In The Walking Dead the zombies have become a nuisance. The real enemies are other human survivors.

“The real enemies are other human survivors.”

I expect that is about how it would turn out.

"Fear" is a decent show. I like the way it shows society breaking down, and think that some of it is on target.

Like how things happen slowly, then all of a sudden. And "Don't trust the government. Ever.". More than a few conservative messages in the show - makes me wonder if the cast realizes what they're preaching.

I was going to post the same thing. In a true SHTF situation (zombie apocalypse or otherwise) a lot of people are going to head for the hills. The population of big game will be wiped out within a month, much of which taken by people who know how to pull a trigger but have no idea how to dress and preserve meat. Deer and elk will be shot for one day's meal, the remainder left to rot.
