The View has become the center of controversy once again, this time after Raven-Symoné admitted that she would not hire someone with a 'black' name.
'I'm not about to hire you if your name is Watermelondrea,' the former child star said to her shocked co-hosts during Thursday's episode of the ABC show.
'It's just not going to happen,' she continued. 'I'm not going to hire you.'
Raven's comment came while the women discussed a recent UCLA study published in the journal Evolution and Human Behavior, which found that Americans make racist assumptions based on people's names.
Whoopi Goldberg introduced the topic and then played a popular YouTube video, titled '60 most ghetto names', for the audience.
The countdown video featured names like 'Grapedrankisha' and 'Fri'Chickenisha'.
'Just to bring it back, can we take back "racist" and say "discriminatory", because I think that's a better word,' Raven asked after the clip ended.
Whoopi nodded, saying 'It's a much better word,' but her agreement was short-lived as Raven continued to speak.
'And I am very discriminatory against words like the ones they were saying in those names,' she said, referencing the video before admitting she would never hire a 'Watermelondrea'.
Whoopi's hands flew to her chest following the comment and she gave the audience a horrified look, but Raven pointed at her reaction and laughed.....

My co-worker that summer was a black fellow named Theodis T. Odee. Just saying his name prompted a smile. Fortunately, he was a really fun guy to work with and even made light of his own name. He said it was a "sing-song" sounding name and he sang a little ditty he made up using his name.
But a name I will never forget.
That’s a cool name, actually.
Yeah, it is. He thought so too.
It reminds me of a mix of deep South, blues music, and Greek influence. It’s so different, but unforgettable....Mista T. Odeeeeee!! Cool story, HotHunt
I don’t blame the people for having odd names. I blame the parents. They are the root of the problem unless the person purposely changed their name.
It’s a classic.
As a young intern at a local Family Court I came across the name LaFart Johnson as I was filing. Who would name their son LaFart?
“Let a fortune 500 corporation say this to a latiqua or a shanikwa.”
Hopefully no one at a Fortune 500 company would be dumb enough to say it. There are always valid reasons to choose against someone, other than the actual reason.
exactly!
In John Lott’s book “Unintended Consequences” there was a black FBI agent with the first name Gon-NOR-ea.
Move the accent from “NOR” to the “E” and what do you have?
I read that book 30 years ago and I still remember that agent’s name...LOL!
I would judge her by her hair
Also by visible tats, if she has any.
Great chart.
Sorry for the odd post.
I originally posted a cartoon of Foghorn Leghorn, the Warner Bros’ old rooster character, in a pose, hairstyle and an expression almost exactly the same as that weird Symone chick.
Instead what came up was the lewd Tripod logo which I assume must be a copyright stamp. My bad.
The local paper runs an area’s most wanted feature and one “featured’ gal was named “Vendetta”.
That is either the most awful or most awesome name, ever, depending on your point of view.
:)

Spcifically "Joy Behar then swiftly changed the topic, saying that white people were fond of naming their children after fruits and vegetables."
