When we released Raspberry Pi 2 in February this year, we announced that Microsofts Windows 10 IoT Core, a version of Windows 10 for small Internet-of-Things devices that may or may not have a screen, would be available for the device. Since the Windows Insider release of Windows 10 Core in August, weve found that lots of people looking for a Pi 2 are arriving at sellers websites from sites catering for Windows developers. Many Windows developers are coming to Raspberry Pi for the first time; we couldnt be more pleased to welcome them, and we hope theyll encounter much success and plenty of fun building with Raspberry Pi.
Yesterday, Microsoft and Adafruit announced the release of a new Windows 10 Core Starter Pack for Raspberry Pi 2.
Were proud to announce that we are partnering with Adafruit to release a new Starter Kit designed to get you started quickly and easily on your path of learning either electronics or Windows 10 IoT Core and the Raspberry Pi 2. Steve Teixera on the Windows BlogThe pack is available with a Pi 2 for people who are are new to Raspberry Pi or whod like a dedicated device for their projects, or without one for those wholl be using a Pi they already own. The box contains an SD card with Windows 10 Core and a case, power supply, wifi module and Ethernet cable for your Pi; a breadboard, jumper wires and components including LEDs, potentiometers and switches; and sensors for light, colour, temperature and pressure. Theres everything you need to start building.

Hint: I think it's cool. AND it's heresy... :-)
I love me some Pi.
The new quad-core Pi is lots of fun and even usable as a replacement for a standard desktop computer.
The Pi can be a pretty secure machine for getting on the net.
I work at Verizon in the training content division.
IoT is about to become YUGE.
For reals: you’ll be able to punish an intruder who breaks into your house, while you’re at work, in real time. Maybe not legal.
Also, home invaders will be able to turn off all your lights right before they kick in your door.
My Pi is slow enough without a Microsoft OS. I think I’ll skip Win 10.
Nah, it’s cool and it will pull more people with Microsoft orientation into the fold. Of course there will be angst when low-information types find that it won’t replace their PC, won’t run regular Windows programs etc, only those that have been converted to Universal Windows Apps. And that the primary intent is headless embedded gizmos that do lord-only-knows-what under the banner of IoT, many of which range from silly to things better done with a $9 Arduino.
But I like my Pi’s and I’m sure for the low low price of free, I’m sure the day will come when one runs Windows 10 IoT Core.
I may use a pi to power a full-sized BB8 I told my kids we’d build right after we see it in action in the movie. With Windows 10, it’ll make it a bit easier to port C# code, a preferred language of mine.
M4L Raspberry Pi
Exactly - and the sysfs makes it pretty simple to control devices. Guess I’d have to look at the OS but why would I want to give up the unix type familiarity and history as well the ability so compile my kernel to exactly what I want.
I just don’t see developers wanting to make something, harder, slower, less secure and more difficult to debug. I can just see VB.NET with the latest incantation of Crystal Reports for the Rasberry Pi2.
However, even I take my tech opinions with grain of salt I don’t understand why people use PHP but they do, usually the same geniuses that think serverside javascript nodejs is a good idea.
That's VERY cool! Good luck and success with the project. While it's in process, and certainly when done, please consider posting a vanity with some pics and commentary -- I'll be happy to ping the Windows list to it.
This is the stupidest idea EVER
That’s why there is a 700 lumen light next to the 1911 on my bedside table. But being a software guy anyway, not going to trust my house to software. ... ;-/
Why so? I get that you don't like it, but why do you call it stupid?
I love the Pi, and I work for MS, and I admit to knowing very little about this. But, with that caveat in mind, I am a bit baffled as to what the benefit is of using Windows over Linux here. With Linux, I am always certain, with enough work, I can make it do what I want because ultimately I can always go look at and possibly modify source code, plus there is a huge commuity of people who can answer questions, With Windows Core, that does not seem to be the case.
So curious to hear what you and others like abou this and what you think the benefits are.
As far as writting C# on the pi. I think you've been able to do this for awhile with Mono .Net
The clr will kill performance as the jvm seems to do already oracle says they have jvm that works well but oracle says lots of things that are at odds with reality.
Maybe MS got a streamlined light version of the CLR with a whole new set of bugs and missing all the features you've come to love?
So much overhead on already stressed hardware when there are much simpler alternatives.
What did the NSA err I mean whoever use for stuxnet virsus? I think the magic combination is lua and c++ I believe that is used for flameas well.
I bring this up because I've seen some amazing things done with very small clean lua programs. Things that you wouldn't mind maintaing a year from now.
Also I don't want my basement flood because my washer has been hacked
I've used perl to great effect on the Pi. Faster than python which is much faster than ruby in my experience.
So many cool things ...
You are so true - be very careful of what you let software control. Especially if you or other people wrote it. There is such a thing as high tech solutions to low tech problems.
That being said I’m automating everything and building robots, I know this will end badly
Ah! Methinks we have an IT professional in our midst.
I second the motion.
I’ll third it.
Why would I buy a Pi just to have it BSOD.
i use mine for Kodi (xbmc for ye with a longer memory). absolutely fantastic and bullet proof. no intention to change to win10 but options are always nice to have and its good to see microsoft realise they have to play in other fields...
competition is always good
we need a “like” button around here. :’)
