In 1950, an unfussy, callow rookie tiptoed into the Dodgers broadcast booth and never left. Vin Scully was just 22 and a year removed from his graduation at Fordham when he suddenly found himself alongside veterans Connie Desmond and the legendary Red Barber in calling Brooklyn Dodgers games on radio and television.
Sixty-five years later, Scully and the Dodgers are both in Los Angeles and both still together. Throughout a career in which he has called the NFL, golf, tennis and, of course, baseball for a national audience and even did college basketball in his early days, he remains a fixture of Dodgers games on both television (for SportsNet LA) and radio (KLAC).
Scully is now arguably the Dodgers' biggest star, but in his debut season, the prodigy knew his place. "I was as young or younger as most of the players," Scully says. "So as long as I kept my mouth shut, I fit in."

Just noting that back in the old days, cigarettes were advertised on TV as we see here.
Vin Scully’s voice is the soundtrack to my youth.
Quite a fellow.
Genius.
Red Barber and the Brooklyn Dodgers amazing hard luck lineup were among the reasons this Arizona desert rat loved listening to baseball on the radio. For the longer haul, Vin Scully was the greatest announcer out of many great ones. Of course, being a Dodger fan just might influence my opinion.
L.S./M.F.T. - Lucky Strike Means Fine Tobacco!
I grew up in So Cal listening to Vin Scully and thankfully, Scully is still announcing. I miss Chick Hearn (1916-2002), John Wooden (1910-2010), and Jim Murray (1919-1998). Scully has a sweet, welcoming, dulcet voice and wonderful stories. Sure, his stories get repeated but it is still fun for the youngsters.
Vin Scully is still the soundtrack to my summer.
Wow, talk about piling on the icons... Ebbets Field, Vin Scully, WOR, Lucky Strikes, and Schaefer Beer.
I remember another commercial in which LSMFT stood for “Lucky Strike Means Flavor Tip”. Brings back memories of old commercials doesn’t it???
...and here all this time I thought it stood for Let's Screw/My Finger's Tired... but there it is, right on the carton... that I paid $84 bucks for today.
Now, can someone buy a f3llow FReeper a quart bottle of Schaefer? I'm BROKE!
Yes. Scully is a genius.
I still listen to him when he broadcast the Dodgers home games. He is not talking at you, he’s talking with you.
I’m always aware that at his age, he will not be broadcasting for too much longer so I try to catch a game whenever I get a chance.
OMG he is just baby in this photo
Well you got start somewhere eh ES LOL!
That one suck part about living in Alaska for few years in 1990s NO Vin Scully this way before internet streaming ES BOY was I glad when I came back that first spring
I knew spring was just around the corner when I first hear Vin Scully voice
Being a Cardinal fan, it’s still a welcomed treat to listen to him broadcast a game. Wonderful stories, and the one thing I have noticed this year is that during a broadcast, he spends a great deal of time talking about the opposing team. He educates his home audience on players that are not Dodgers. He is not a Dodger blue homie. He expands the game of baseball for his listeners.
Chick Hearnisms deserve a book by themselves.
