This Temporary Tattoo Can Monitor Diabetics' Glucose Levels as Accurately as a Finger Prick

[I really think it is important to highlight all the great advances in technology and medicine, to show what is good in society and what we can accomplish if we put our minds to it! Even if you don’t have diabetes you should appreciate the advances that can be made—if government regulators and Obama don’t destroy the medical industry first.]

This Temporary Tattoo Can Monitor Diabetics' Glucose Levels as Accurately as a Finger Prick

“A flexible and easy-to-wear temporary tattoo could help diabetics manage their condition without daily finger pricks.”

By FIONA MACDONALD January 15, 2015

Engineers from the University of California, San Diego have developed an ultra-thin temporary tattoo that can painlessly and accurately monitor the glucose levels of diabetics.

The flexible device costs just a few cents and lasts for a day at a time, and early tests have shown that it's just as sensitive as a finger-prick test.

But even cooler is the fact that the system works without blood, by extracting and measuring the glucose from the fluid in between skin cells, and could eventually be adapted to detect other important metabolites in the body, or deliver medicine.

It also looks awesome, as you can see below…

This is especially good for those diabetics who need frequent monitoring throughout the day, and whose blood glucose levels tend to fluctuate unexpectedly.

The flexible device costs just a few cents...

But after Big Pharma gets their mitts on it, it will cost $124.95.

It’s possible within five to ten years diabetics will monitor their blood sugar with this skin-based sensor and take insulin using special skin patches. In short, we may be approaching the day where we won’t need a finger prick to get a blood sample to test blood sugar and don’t need painful injections of insulin, either.

That’s a good question. Years ago I had to give our old cat insulin shots but there was no way to test her beforehand. If there had been a way to test she might not have gone into a diabetic coma and passed away.

As a type II in my old age it would be a lot easier to test by way of a patch or temp tattoo.

Look to the FDA to do everything they can to drag out the testing phase for years and years, costing the developers tens of millions of dollars.

Or you could get thin and drink Alpiste everyday and not have type II at all. That’s what we do. Google it.

As the mother of two type 1 diabetics, I hope you are right.

In fact, I can see it as an armband where you wrap it around the forearm for about 30 minutes. As such, part of the armband senses the blood sugar level through the skin, and another part of the armband--based on the data collected by the blood sugar sensor--dispenses the right amount of insulin on another part of the armband through the skin using a patch-like connection.

Indeed, using skin patches to deliver medicine is the next major frontier of medical technology, one that could eliminate the need for shots.
