Electric Cars Worse For Health, Environment, Than Gas-Powered, Study Claims
Inquisitr ^ | December 28, 2014 06:27 GMT | Julian Marshall, University of Minnesota

Think electric cars are the only form of transportation that can save the world from the dangers of the gas-powered engine? A new study warns that they could actually have the opposite effect.

Gannett’s Cincinnati website cites the findings of a study to be published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences next week.

In it, co-author and University of Minnesota engineering professor Julian Marshall explains the findings.

“It’s kind of hard to beat gasoline [for the environment]… A lot of the technologies that we think of as being clean … are not better than gasoline.”

Electric cars would fall into this grouping if the source of combustion involves coal. These types of vehicles actually make the “air dirtier, worsening global warming,” the news site states.

Furthermore, they lead to more critical health hazards.

Seth Borenstein of the Associated Press combed through the study and notes that if ignition comes from coal, “electric cars produce 3.6 times more soot and smog deaths than gas, because of the pollution made in generating the electricity.”

Another topic they don’t seem to be talking much about is the making and disposal of the battery systems for electric cars and what the environmental bugaboos are.

and if the electricity comes from windmills.....

Big Wind's Dirty Little Secret: Toxic Lakes and Radioactive waste...

Oct 23, 2013 - Modern wind turbines depend on rare earth minerals mined primarily from China. ... Big Wind's Dependence on China's “Toxic Lakes”.

Also this:

A few residents in Falmouth, Massachusetts have finally won in their battle to have local wind turbines shut down due to the noise levels that they produced.

The Department of Environmental Protection released a report on Tuesday which stated that the noise levels from turbines less than 1,500 feet from the nearest home exceeded the acceptable state levels. Three megawatts of wind power will be shut down whilst further investigations are under way.

Everyone be careful with articles like this. For some reason Freepers take delight in anything negative about electric cars, but make no mistake, this is really a leftist attack on coal. Don’t fall for it.

I make my living by burning coal to make electricity, but the article is right. There are good uses for things and bad uses for things.

Growing corn to feed people: GOOD.
Growing corn to convert to fuel: BAD.

Burning coal to power homes and business: GOOD.
Burning coal to replace clean-burning, efficient modern internal combustion engines: BAD.

Perhaps, but at least they cut an important revenue source for Russia, the Middle East, not to mention Venezuela. Also this is couched in the “evils” of using our very abundant resource coal.

Also this is couched in the “evils” of using our very abundant resource coal, I guess the alternative would be nuclear for all that electricity, and nuclear has come a long way since Three Mile Island. It’s just a shame that we have not replaced our aging plants with more modern ones, ironically in the name of environmentalism.

I have no problem with coal, and I get the poor energy conversion for electric cars. However, some of what I am looking into makes me wonder if that could all change, which is a huge shift for me as I have not been a proponent of E-Cars.

Read this post, I'd love you feedback: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/news/3240394/posts?page=29#29

Are Battery breakthroughs ( amd replacing plants w/ here and now Co-Gen Nat. Gas Plants ) almost here for a real paradigm shift?....

When you look at producing electricity from coal, there is an amazing loss of efficiency eg the heat up the stack even with economizers and super heaters. Add in the heat loss during condensation in the turbine chain, the steam (condensation) coming off the hyperbolic cooling towers...the efficiency btu in vs usable btu out (energy vs energy out) is about 30%. When you look at gasoline, your heat loss is minimal by comparison. So Internal combustion is more efficient by more than 100%, comparatively speaking. The slightest knowledge of energy application reveals an electric car is an elaborate hoax for the uninformed public.

Hoaxes work easily in a Gruber-stupid voting public scenario. I'm actually starting like this guy...he speaks more truth than any of them and obviously better understands the "system." To get rid of electric cars, no amount of factual information on thermodynamics will alter the course. The "stupid public" doesn't even know what the term means. Altering the course is much easier, you pay a "scientist" some tax dollars to show electricnc cars cause a 23.4% reduction in sexual drive. Then people will get rid of electric cars! (Don't ask....What does truth and fact have to do with it?)
