Has FR been Pigeon Holed by Google Chrome?
None ^ | 12/26/2013 | PeteePie

I came into work today and fired up Google Chrome, like on any other day. My Google home page usually displays the eight most frequently visited websites in icon/link form. The icon and link for Free Republic has always occupied the number one or two spot, depending on my frequency of visits. But today Chrome looked different. It wasn't just the new seasonal header image but that some of my frequently visited icon images have been replaced by some infrequently visited icon/links. I clicked on 'Do Not Show on This Page' option for these newbies and it replaced them with other less frequently visited sites until it ran out of replacements and left me with a blank icon with no link. WTH? It never offered FR as a replacement icon despite the fact that I click on it half a dozen times every day at least.

Note; ignore the source url, if I used google's url, I would be forced to excerpt, which doesn't make sense in this case.

It does just fine but this is my side-of-my-easychair computer for doing stuff like browsing FR. I have 3 newer PCs with Linux, two of which are 64 bit. One is dual boot (Win 7 Pro and Mint), the other is for playing with. That’s where I’ve been playing with Mint, Debian, LDME, Fedora, etc.

I’ve also been running live secure mixes like Tails and Ubuntu Privacy Remix.

One issue that I’ve had with a few old laptops is that they won’t accept some distros as they require PAE.

I’ve not used Opera. I used Chrome but it’s memory hog, then Mozilla which seems to get tied up in some Java script BS over longer periods and then IE which won’t display properly but has some of the plugins I use.

And then everyone tells me how perfect their currently used browser is. What a pant load.

Why use Chrome anyway? Inferior to Firefox for my use, as it cannot even provide multiple tab rows, but Google is liberal.

I would recommend the NOIA 4 theme , and TabMixPlus enables multiple tab rows, and ColorfulTabs make them more distinctive, and Session Manager enables saving many sessions.

What are your system specs and OS?

I just installed Fedora after Linux Mint failed to work good enough for me as a supplementary OS (installed progs did not even show up, and failed to boot, etc.), but among other things that would make things easier as in Windows, neither enables you to right click on icons in the Star menu and find actual program locations. And the Dolphin file browser has a poor interface.

Is anyone running the Linux version of Chrome, called Chromium? I heard its a lot lighter and faster than Firefox.

Well I just downloaded Firefox and am not looking back on Chrome. I’ve been noticing how ads appear for stuff I was looking at on other sites, kinda creeps me out and at the same time, pisses me off. I don’t like spies!!

THANKS ALL!!!

<> That's possible, since it happened on my work computer, which isn't really mine now, is it?

I’m with both of you, went back to IE and use Bing.
Bing works better than Google for me, and I like the daily pic if you use it as your home page :)

I imagine, but without the FF extensions they are not preferred by me.

These are the add-ons I am currently using. In FireFox, click on Tools and then select Add-ons and then it is easy to install the add-ons you like.

I had the same problem; I deleted one of the “frequently visited” tabs at random and then clicked “restore all” and et voila, Free Republic was back in the prime position as it should be. Probably not a real problem.
