Cuba shutters private theaters, threatens other businesses

HAVANA (Reuters) - Cuba closed dozens of home-based movie theaters on Saturday and reaffirmed its plans to end the private sale of imported goods as communist authorities pressed for "order, discipline and obedience" in the growing small business sector.

A government statement issued through official media said home-based theaters and video games will "stop immediately in any type of self employment," a local euphemism for small business.

The statement said "the showing of movies, including in 3D salons, and likewise the organization of computer games, has never been authorized."

The government banned the private sale of imported goods last month, a measure that potentially affects some 20,000 small businesses and their employees who sell clothing, hardware and other goods brought in informally by travelers, some of whom visit the Caribbean island regularly carrying merchandise from the United States, Spain and Latin American countries.

President Raul Castro, who replaced his brother Fidel in 2008, has instituted a series of market-oriented reforms to Cuba's Soviet style economy where the state still employs 79 percent of the 5 million-strong labor force.

Yea, we're seeing that happen in the USA as well.

That’s right in some places here you’re in big trouble if try to sell your garden vegetables at your front yard, or have a garage sale, or set up a lemonade stand.

Liberals look at communism in action and say “let’s bring it here!”
Normal people look at communism in action and say “not here!”

When can we expect our communist authorities to press for “order, discipline and obedience” in the health care sector?

this was just days after one of the state owned newspapers did a report on these home theaters and how the technology was better than state theaters.

That article had zero criticism. Now of course it probably reports how they needed to be shut down.

"Sometimes the government seems to want to make our lives worse for the fun of it," she said, asking her last name not be used.

She probably does not have access to the works of Orwell, esp. 1984. In that book, the purpose of the power held by the totalitarian statists is EXACTLY that, namely the ability to inflict pain on others. This is yet another 100% accurate truism explored by Orwell at length.

BTW, this also explains a lot of what Obama and the other leftist politicians in DC (both in the Donk and GOPe parties) are doing to America and Americans.

Funny how the traffic in the Florida Straits between Cuba and the US seems to all go one way.

For fifty two years they are still trying to make the REVELO-O-O-SHUN work.

Fifty two years after the American Revolution the nation was already an economic powerhouse.

Its really a shame that JFK chickened out of providing air support for the rebels when they invaded. A dam shame and I think that was the main reason he paid with his life.

True enough for those considered to be Obama’s enemies which in the case of ObamaCare would seem to be 99% of US citizens.

-— home theaters with better quality than the state theaters -—

I visited Poland a year after the wall fell. State run TV ran images of Vietnamese harvesting rice. On another station I saw tropical fish.

The local cinema looked like a run down office building. The sign, which imaginatively read, “cinema,” was made from 3/8 in steel, carved with an arc welder, and painted black. It was propped up on the roof.

Exactly!! But they certainly sing praises to Cuba under the Castro brothers upon their return. But you are right they don’t stay long and when they are there are probably on guided tours and so forth.
