Nazis offered peace with the Allies in 1941… but only if they were allowed to invade Russia

The Nazis attempted to broker a peace offering with Britain—if they were allowed a free path to attack the USSR, a new book has revealed.

Rudolf Hess’s flight to Britain during World War Two to sign a peace deal ordered by Adolf Hitler has long been recorded as a bizarre one-man mission to try and reconcile warring West Europe and the Nazis. …

But historian Peter Padfield has discovered evidence he claims proves that the deputy Führer held a detailed peace treaty.

It proposed that the Nazis would withdraw from western Europe, in exchange for British neutrality over a planned attack on Russia, the Daily Telegraph reported. …

Hmph. Just another treaty. If true.

And the Democrats offered to fund the government only if they are allowed to implement Obamacare...

Maybe we should have taken them up on it. Let Enemy 1 fight Enemy 2 while we sit and watch.

But then, not enough people would have died to suit FDR.

FDR didn’t regard Stalin as an enemy anyhow.

May very well have been true. Hitler's primary objective in the war to the West, besides humiliating France, was to secure his rear for Barbarossa, the all-out onslaught to the East. If he could have achieved that security without expending his forces, he would have. At least for the time being.

Sounds like something out of a Harry Turtledove novel.

He would have been back warring with the west anyhow, and with renewed vigor if he had actually secured his eastern front. He laid claim to the orb, scepter, crown and imperial sword of the Holy Roman Empire, remember, and he was not going to let the traditional territory of that empire go free if he could help it.

If this had happened and Hitler had managed to destroy the Soviet Union, what would he have done then? Turned his attention back to defeating the Western European countries?

Had this been accepted, a larger number of Soviet Jews might have fallen into German hands, so the death toll from the Holocaust might well have been even larger than it was.

Interesting. Let Hitler and Stalin kick each others butts.

Sure. The purpose of Molotov-Ribbentrop at all was to secure Hitler’s east. And laying claim to the crown jewels of the Holy Roman Empire spelled out Hitler’s intentions only too clearly.

Two genocidal nations fighting each other in a war of attrition. We should have really supported that action.

I'm not so sure considering his actions toward the end of the war. The last three (relatively) well-equipped new armies that the German war machine was able to crank out in the fall of 1944 were sent to the western front for what was to become the Battle of the Bulge offensive, not to the east.

Then when the Battle of Berlin was nearing its final conclusion, Hitler told his staff that a takeover by the Soviets was far preferable to a takeover by the Americans and Brits because Soviet style Communism was far closer to his ideal brand of national socialism.

It would have been horrific, for Jews and for Christians and for anyone else viewed as the old guard, and the peace gained thereby for Britain only temporary.

Russian atheistic communism was horrible, but not as horrible as the overtly demonic Nazism. Buttressing Russia against Germany supported a lesser monster, one which eventually did yield to a more open model of government but not before giving the world jitters for decades.

Monday morning quarterbacking WWII. In 1941 it was the Soviet Union that had been genocidal, not Germany. And the genocide continued after Germany was defeated in 1945, while the West was whistling Dixie past the graveyards of millions murdered by Communists. 100+ million to day. Hitler was a piker, despite what we are told daily and daily.

I always believe Hess went to England on Hitler’s orders.

Hess didn’t take a dump unless the Fuhrer told him to.

It was Hitler’s scientists that had the ballistic missiles, jet fighters and the beginnings of atomic weapons. Hardly a piker, and certainly not in the vein of targeted genocide versus the USSR’s indiscriminate genocide. Whitewashing won’t serve any good purpose here, especially in regards to the aggressor entity.
