Renowned for its lethal striking power and rugged airframe, the Air Forces A-10 Thunderbolt has proven its mettle on thousands of combat missions in more than three decades in service. But now it's future may be in question due to budget cuts and shifting missions. Heres a look.

Read the book BOYD. It’s about the Air Force fighter pilot who helped bring about the A-10 and F-16.
“You can be somebody, or you can do something. You can’t have both.”
Did you ever use the range at Ft. Drum? Have watched A-10s and F-16s flying over the cottage we use in the summer. Awesome to watch.

Going that fast backwards was what ripped the suspension out.
Yep. John Boyd was maybe the smartest guy in the whole DOD and the USAF pissed on him, for years. Didn’t even represent at his funeral. Made me ashamed of the branch I served. At least the Marines appreciated him, but no one thought to tape his briefings on Warfare. What a loss.
My take on that is that on the smart car, there is nothin’ to crumble! LOL! :-)
Good point :)
Heard the same version of Dilger’s “discharge,” and he was originally facing felony weapons charges. But by the time he went to court, the charges had been reduced to misdemeanors and he walked. Must have had a good lawyer. Connections on Capitol Hill didn’t hurt, either. From a newspaper account at the time:
“Are they going to talk about replacing it with the F-16 again?”
No, USAF will replace the A-10 with the best available aircraft - the F-35!
The F-35 is the only possible aircraft. It is made in the US and very expensive. Because it is stealth it isn’t hardened against even small arms. No joke, sorry.
They should paint Tank Treads on the bottom of the Fuselage.
Those Planes are awesome, but the idiots think an F-35 can replace them. We are being ruled by incompetent fools.
I’ma cry now.
*ugh*
Yes, I did.
Thanks for the link. Interesting. I guess he did suffer enough, as he was a complete putz for bringing a live 30mm round. . .makes no sense to do that. Can’t shoot it anywhere near Wash DC or the surrounding area. That is what weapons testing ranges are for.
So he demonstrated to the world he was an idiot. . .so, yes, he suffered enough.
Thanks again for the link. Cheers.
The A-10 is so slow it can’t be carrier qualified as they can’t figure out how to put the arresting hook on backwards.
The A-10 is so slow it doesn’t have a clock in the cockpit. . .it has a calendar.
The A-10 is so slow that is suffers bird-strikes from the rear. . .
Enjoyed flying that jet above all others. . .too include the F-15E.
The A-10, the last of the true manly cowboy jets.
And can’t replace the A-10 with the F-16 because the F-16 is being replaced by the JSF.
I’ve posted this before, but it was interesting to me: Many years ago I was engaged in photo services for a group reunion of WWII pilots. Every one of them had flown both aircraft in combat and all preferred the P-47 to the ‘51. They said the Jug would get you home more often than the ‘Stang.
And every one of them loved strafing.
“And every one of them loved strafing”
Who doesn’t?
Lots of A-10s flying over Millsite Lake from time to time. Our cottage is on the south shore at the west end of the lake near Streetcar or Trolly car island (depends on who you talk to). Great stuff to watch. Used to listen to range control on a radio scanner.
Those on the receiving team?
