The treasure found by the Schmitts comes from the wreckage of a convoy of 11 ships that were destroyed in a hurricane off the coast of Florida in 1715 while en route from Havana to Spain. The 1977 film "The Deep" and the 2008 "Fool's Gold" film were based off of the 1715 wreckage.
According to the ships' manifests, $400 million worth of treasure was on board and so far only $175 million has been found, Brisben said.

Dig all night. Don’t tell a soul. Live as low key as possible. Resist the urge to go buy that new Range Rover with cash. (Or 7 or 8 oz of gold.)
Stupid for saying anything about it?
Ragnar Danneskjöld, where are you?!
If I ever came across a stash like that, I’m not sure if I’d be saying anything.
I don’t know enough about the international laws when it comes to treasure to know if I didn’t have to declare it.
According to the article”
Snip..
n accordance with U.S. and Florida law, the treasure will be taken into custody by the U.S. District Court in South Florida. The state of Florida will then be allowed to possess up to 20 percent of the find to put on display in a state-run museum. The remainder of the gold will be split evenly between Brisben’s company and the Schmitt family.
Look for the Spanish government to claim it, and / or the US government. They’re both so broke they can’t pay attention, and a family doesn’t have the resources to fight back.
Then I'd buy an underground safe.
I know. STFU and retire away from the country and obamacare.
Obama has his den of thieves are on the ground with no knock warrants serving the ‘’family’’. They will take all the gold as Clint Eastwood in Murphy’s Heros
Under international maritime law, if a wreck is found to be a warship sunk while on duty, its cargo remains the property of the ships country of origin.

Yeah, and the state takes 20% off the top and then the family has to pay 50% to the person who owns the rights.
The family will then receive $70k which will be again taxed by the government, so the family will end up with:
font size=4>$50,400.
So in other words, shut up and melt it down.
$50,400.
Don’t forget ObamaCare. They’re broke.
RRRRRRRRRRRRRR! ‘tis a few weeks early, but we’ll not make ye walk the plank fer it!
Kelly’s Heros...
Yep, nice thing about gold....lotsa value in an itty-bitty space.
lets see....$300k - 20% = 240k then X 1/2 = 120k. but then what happens? how do you pay taxes on treasure? when you sell them? i guess at that point it’s income
Then I though about taxes and corporate tax rates.
Then I thought of Yosemite Sam and Bugs Bunny.
Yosemite Sam tells Bugs Bunny: "You find the gold and I'll share it with you."
