Am I Being Vindictive and/or Petty? (Vanity Post)
MplsSteve

Posted on 11/07/2012 1:27:47 PM PST by MplsSteve

I have an uncle in Wisconsin. He's slightly mentally handicapped and lives in subsidized housing because of his income level.

In tribute to my Grandma (who's been gone a number of years and of whom I still miss), I send my uncle a check every month. The check is only $30.00. I believe he uses it for living expenses that aren't covered by assistance. I rarely get an acknowledgement/thank you from him - unless of course, I'm late in mailing it out.

My uncle voted for Obama. Normally, I say "Live and let live" and let it go at that. But I am thinking about telling him that effective 1/01/13, that I'm cutting his monthly check from $30.00 to $15.00 because of the impending increase in taxes that I'll be paying as a result of Barack Obama's policies.

Given that my uncle is slightly mentally handicapped, I'm wavering about this. I don't wanna appear like a cad but at the same time, I don't wanna be taken for granted and want him to know that actions have consequences.

What would you do?

How how HOW can the parent be a freeper and the daughter be an Obama voter?
How did that happen?

Keep helping out. Your generosity towards him wasn’t based on politics anyway. JMHO

My phone has been ringing off the hook.

Various liberal relatives venting their “outrage”...now THOSE were the funny conversations! Wish I’d recorded them.

Thanksgiving dinner with these people ought to be a hoot ;-)

It's a very tempting thought, isn't it? Given that he's mentally handicapped, you should keep sending the money.

My wife and I have been having similar type conversations here. Here's what we've decided going forward. We have a relative who is a liberal nun who runs an inner city charity. She obviously helps her clients through a mix of government and private charity. We've always been generous with her specific requests in the past. We'll probably give her whatever she wants before the tax increases are enacted. But once those increases come we're just going to tell her we are unable to give due to the massive tax increase we're enduring. It'll happen.

As far as specific relatives who go on and off "the payroll" we're going to see what happens next time they ask. Surgery for the cat? Nope - tax increases too burdensome to spare money for that. Large cash gift at Christmas? No way. Help paying the rent? That's the tough one - we'll cross that bridge when (not if) we come to it.

If you can’t depend on your own heart to decide what’s right then a forum full of people can’t help you.

Is he elderly? If something happened to him, would you feel guilty about cutting him off?

Just me, but you said you’re doing this to honor your grandmother. I wouldn’t let his lack of appreciation become an issue.

If $30 is not a burden, continue sending. But if it happens to become a burden one month, send him a letter and explain it at that time.

On the other hand, if you were to find out he’s using it for booze or for subsidizing someone else, I’d send $30 in his name to a children’s hospital and let him know you did this.

If he makes his monthly allowance to his mentally ill relative dependent on how his mentally ill relative votes, how is that not “vote buying”?

Sorry, editor-surveyor, but you’re advocating a democrat tactic here.

What would you do?

Just stop mailing him checks altogether. That'll really teach him a lesson and you'll feel so much better.....

No, as usual, you twist the posts of others in a vain attempt to validate your stupidity.

It is unlawful to allow a mentally diminished person to vote.

"No, as usual, you twist the posts of others in a vain attempt to validate your stupidity. It is unlawful to allow a mentally diminished person to vote."

I didn't twist nothing. And you didn't mention legality of mentally ill voting in any of your posts to me until now. If you want to pursue that line, that's a valid course.

But cutting off funds to try to manipulate someone into voting your way is "vote buying" plain and simple.

That's different from companies laying people off because of perceived changes in governmental policies that affect their business. Provided that the motive for the layoff is really the expected effect on the business and not just anger and sore loser vindictiveness.

You will have time to think this over before Jan.but it would help if you made up your mind now.In honor of your Grandmother I would continue to send it until you can’t afford to.

Well, if anything your vanity has shown us that the majority of FReepers really are gentle and caring people. There’s a few maladjusted misandrists in every bunch, and we’re no exception. Just ignore the ignorant calls to spite a blood relative over an election. Obviously some of FR’s more petty members are seriously butt hurt and would kick kittens if they stepped off a Democrats lawn.

As long as you can afford it, continue sending the checks.

Are you religious at all?

What do you think God thinks about stopping a meager monthly check?

What do you think The Adversary thinks about this situation?

I admit it is speculation, but I’d wager God wouldn’t be too keen on it, and The Adversary would be grinning.

The decision about who to vote for is one of the most important and deeply personal decisions one can make in a democratic nation. I find your attempt to blackmail your daughter into voting for your preferred candidate quite disgusting.

That being said, I think she’s probably better off without your “support” since it was conditional upon her giving up one of her most sacred human rights.
