Man is accidentally shot by his own dog

Dogs are man's best friend. Except, you know, when they're shooting a gun at you.

And strangely enough, that's what really happened to a hapless dog owner in Brigham City, Utah. The man in question--a 46-year-old hunting enthusiast who is not named in local news reports on the incident--got a behind-full of birdshot courtesy of his loyal canine companion when he was out duck hunting over the weekend.

When waterfowl hunting, the gun is always loaded, and rarely held by the hunter. In a boat, the only choice is to lay it down (as apposed to leaning it against something, it might fall and go off....).

Field blinds often are nothing more than a pit with 1 foot of water in the bottom, laying the gun on the berm is the only choice.

It is safer to lay a loaded gun down than to get into a tree stand (though, not by much).
