US study finds Neanderthals ate their veggies

WASHINGTON (AFP) – A US study on Monday found that Neanderthals, prehistoric cousins of humans, ate grains and vegetables as well as meat, cooking them over fire in the same way homo sapiens did.

The new research published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) challenges a prevailing theory that Neanderthals' over reliance on meat contributed to their extinction around 30,000 years ago.

Researchers found grains from numerous plants, including a type of wild grass, as well as traces of roots and tubers, trapped in plaque buildup on fossilized Neanderthal teeth unearthed in northern Europe and Iraq.

Silly theory. Since some animals are pure carnivores, it doesn't seem likely that a more carnivorous diet would somehow lead to extinction.

But how did the Neanderthals treat their gay, lesbian, and trans-gendered people? That’s all that matters to some liberals nowadays. Some condemn all cultures which ever existed, including our own, because we don’t celebrate the diversity of San Francisco.

Seeing as how reading the fossil record is like reading a book with most of the pages either missing or not yet discovered, perhaps the sophistication of these people demonstrates that they are us. Of great interest is the discovery of likely modern humans in the Middle East with an age of some 400,000 years.

I'm cheering for the Neanderthals.

So far it's Neanderthals ~35, Scientists 0.

“The basic non evolution of modern man.”

I was an organic research chemist for a while. Evolution made perfect sense to me.

I was a computer programmer for a while. Evolution made perfect sense to me.

I was a systems analyst for a while. Evolution made perfect sense to me.

I’ve been a mathematician for some time. Evolution still makes perfect sense to me.

It’s not like I give it a free ride; I’m always questioning it and testing it against all the new things I learn, but it always winds up making perfect sense to me.

The toothbrush was invented in the south.

Otherwise it would be a teethbrush.

Thanks Little Bill for the ping and decimon for the topic.

The "Neandertal ate too much meat" and "didn't eat fish" and "was a cannibal" garbage is, well, garbage, part of the just really bizarre racialism that has characterized a number of dip$h!t$ dating back to Virchow.

It used to be claimed that Neandertal couldn't talk, and reason after reason was concocted as to why that was. The obvious question to ask is, "how the hell do you know?" Instead, "well, they had a hyoid bone after all, now we have to figure out why they still couldn't talk." It reminds me of the old "You Can't Win With A Bigot" comic strip in Mad magazine.
The Neandertal Enigma
by James Shreeve

in local libraries
Frayer's own reading of the record reveals a number of overlooked traits that clearly and specifically link the Neandertals to the Cro-Magnons. One such trait is the shape of the opening of the nerve canal in the lower jaw, a spot where dentists often give a pain-blocking injection. In many Neandertal, the upper portion of the opening is covered by a broad bony ridge, a curious feature also carried by a significant number of Cro-Magnons. But none of the alleged 'ancestors of us all' fossils from Africa have it, and it is extremely rare in modern people outside Europe." [pp 126-127]

The Future of the Past: Archaeology in the 21st Century The Future of the Past:
Archaeology in the 21st Century

by Eberhard Zangger

[W]hen the headteacher Johann Karl Fuhlrott discovered the bones of a Neanderthal in a cave near Dusseldorf in 1856... Rudolf Virchow, President of the Deutsche Gessellschaft fur Anthropologie... who personally promoted the principle 'always practise honesty and stand by the facts whatever happens' -- endorsed the interpretation that the Neanderthal was a bow-legged, Mongolian Cossack with rickets, who had been lucky enough to survive multiple head injuries, but who, during a campaign by Russian forces against France in 1814, had been wounded, and (stark naked) had crawled into a cave, where he had died. Thirty years passed before the specialists recognised their mistake. [pp 288-289]

Neanderthals, Humans Interbred, DNA Proves

A newly mapped Neanderthal genome reveals that between 1-4 percent of DNA of many humans today came from Neanderthals.
