Think you're smart enough NOT to fall into the trap of thinking like a liberal racialist? Try this on for size: Name the first African-American senator. He's not who you think. He's not even who you think when I tell you he's not who you think. Answer will be posted in the morning, if no-one gets it by then.
Too easy in this day and age of Google:
Hiram Revels
Hiram Revels of Mississippi became the first African American senator in 1870. Born in North Carolina in 1827, Revels attended Knox College in Illinois and later served as minister in the African Methodist Episcopal Church in Baltimore, Maryland. He raised two black regiments during the Civil War and fought at the battle of Vicksburg in Mississippi. The Mississippi state legislature sent him to the U.S. Senate during Reconstruction where he became an outspoken opponent of racial segregation. Although Revels served in the Senate for just a year, he broke new ground for African Americans in Congress. (Photo: Library of Congress)
Forget his name, but if memory serves it was a Republican elected during reconstruction.
Hiram Revels (R-MS)
Who was the first black senator to be elected by popular vote?

Breaking New Ground — African American Senators
To date, six African Americans have served in the United States Senate. In 1870, Hiram Revels of Mississippi became the first African American senator. Five years later, Blanche K. Bruce of Mississippi took the oath of office. It would be nearly another century, 1967, before Edward Brooke of Massachusetts followed in their historic footsteps. Carol Moseley Braun broke new ground in 1993 becoming the first African American female to serve as U.S. senator. In 2005, Barack Obama of Illinois became the fifth African American to serve and third to be popularly elected. Upon Obama’s resignation to become president, Roland Burris was appointed to fill the vacancy, becoming the sixth African American senator and the third to occupy the same Illinois Senate seat.
WRONG!
Your source (the U.S. Senate web page) reflects liberal thinking. Google won’t help you. Like I said, it’s not even who you think it is when I tell you it’s not who you think it is.
I promise everyone: you will not disagree with me when I tell you the answer. But it is not Hiram Revels.
If you think the answer to your own question is Edward Brooks (R-Mass.), you’re wrong.
I noticed you said “Name the first African-American senator.”
You didn’t say “black”.
must be someone that is from africa but not black.
Bump for tomorrow.
Therese Heinz Kerry is not African-American. She is a European-American who happened to have been born in Africa to European-American parents. I assure you, the person who is the answer to this question comes from a long line of African ancestors.
That’s gonna be my guess.
Maybe it was Obama. After all, he was both kenyan and american when he was elected senator.
That would make him truly “african american”.

The rest are american.
Ha-ha-ha! I give you half a point for cleverness. But that’s not who I meant.
>>must be someone that is from africa but not black.<,
Or someone who was both african AND american. Which would be Obama...
:)
Dang! I know it has to be a play on words. ;)
