Debate: Which President Really Won The Cold War?
12-21-2009

I was watching a debate this morning on CNN while at a doctor's appointment and it got me to thinking...which U.S. President really can take credit for ending the cold war?

The panel was originally discussing the Reagan Revolution in comparison to the Obama Revolution with everything Obama has "accomplished" in 1 year versus what it took Reagan 8 years to do and that Obama has a more "impressive" list of accomplishments in his first year in comparison.

Then one person said "Reagan won the cold war, Obama will never win the war on terror," to which the debate shifted that Reagan really didn't win it and that Russia was collapsing anyway. Of course nobody mentioned that Reagan made the Soviets spend themselves to the point of collapse with the nuclear arms race.

Is there an American president who was more responsible for "winning" the Cold War? I thought the answer was pretty cut and dry myself but apparently revisionist history professors are trying to throw as much sand on Reagan's accomplishments as fast as they can.

Which president really won the Cold War?

Among university leftists the popular answer is: President Gorbachev.

An argument could be made that Carter’s weakness made the Soviets willing to overextend into Afghanistan.

Not that Jimmah won anything including his death match with the rabbit.

And what were those "accomplishments" anyways?

The only two things I can think that Obama actually accomplished was a failed "stimulus" and cash for clunkers which clunked and threw away a lot of cash.

Everything else I can think of is still in pending status.

“Reagan made the Soviets spend themselves to the point of collapse with the nuclear arms race.”

Who won WWII it was the people and not the president because leadership was so shoddy. Who lost Iran?, Carter. Who “won the cold war” The American People under leadership of Reagen

Ted Kennedy sided with the Soviets to undermine President Reagan.

To even consider that someone other than a US president named Reagan was responsible is to be completely unaware of exactly what took place. YOu’re a FReeper and you’re seriously asking this question?

It doesn’t warrant serious consideration and doing so only makes the weak among us think they have a point. In other words, its assinine.

That's right. One example is the lame Cold War revisionist history by John Gaddis. he tells all about how Reagan Thatcher and Pope JP II out-maneuvered the Soviets, despite Gorbachev's desire to keep the Evil Empire viable. Then he turns around and gives Gorbachev more credit because he didn't send tanks into Poland, or some such. The fact of course was that Gorbachev was checkmated and had no choice but to acquiesce.

These leftists are such pests, they just never will be fit to live with. They believe that the truth is secondary to the cause, and that is why they must be crushed, eventually, by any means necessary.

Not so fast FRiend. Do you really believe we "won" the cold war? Looking at how education, entertainment, media, and all levels of local, state, and federal government has been infiltrated by the commies it appears they might have won.

There were communists in our government since the turn of the century. I don’t think of the American Social process as the cold war. What is the cold war anyway?

Well there was indeed one person on the panel who gave credit to Gorbachev and even went out of his way to make a point of showing that is why Reagan wasn’t even mentioned at the Berlin ceremonies last month.

The fact of course was that Gorbachev was checkmated and had no choice but to acquiesce.

You are quite correct that Gorby had his butt kicked. There was no way he could win.

However, I give him enormous credit for the way he lost. He most certainly could have ensured that the Soviet Empire collapsed in blood. In fact, it would have been quite possible for hundreds of million to have died during its fall.

I think sometime few of us really realize what a bullet we dodged there.

There’s no valid argument for any president besides Reagan to take credit for the fall through any positive, planned action. Any other credit is incidental or accidental.

Even Gorbachev was forced into a corner. Hell, he didn’t even order the Wall to come down, it just happened.

Did you read what I said? I said it was obvious to me that Reagan had done so...but...the beautiful thing about FR is how you do find differing opinions as to how Reagan did so i.e. was it when Nixon opened up relations with China? Was it any other things that might have blown down some doors.

Believe me..I am 100% in the Reagan column. I think the fact that CNN needed to throw acid in the eyes of Reagan to make the burn from the healthcare vote sting even more shows why they are in like 3rd or 4th place in the ratings.

From Eisenhower on, excepting the seditious cARTER, they all played a part and helped the cause.

It was Ronald Reagan who was relentless and steadfast.

Reagan’s actions and words at Reykjavik (and afterwards) took Gorby by surprise, and he knew that Reagan was not to be toyed with.
