The UFO Phenomenon - Seeing is Believing
ABC News ^ | February 4, 2005 - airtime Feb 24, 2005 | ABC News

Feb. 4, 2005 -- Almost 50 percent of Americans, according to recent polls, and millions of people elsewhere in the world believe that UFOs are real. For many it is a deeply held belief.

For decades there have been sightings of UFOs by millions and millions of people. It is a mystery that only science can solve, and yet the phenomenon remains largely unexamined. Most of the reporting on this subject by the mainstream media holds those who claim to have seen UFOs up to ridicule.

On Feb. 24, "Peter Jennings Reporting: UFOs — Seeing Is Believing" takes a fresh look at the UFO phenomenon. "As a journalist," says Jennings, "I began this project with a healthy dose of skepticism and as open a mind as possible. After almost 150 interviews with scientists, investigators and with many of those who claim to have witnessed unidentified flying objects, there are important questions that have not been completely answered — and a great deal not fully explained."

This two-hour primetime special reports on the entire scope of the UFO experience — from the first famous sighting by Kenneth Arnold in 1947 to the present day. The program draws on interviews with police officers, pilots, military personnel, scientists and ordinary citizens who give extraordinary accounts of encounters with the unexplained. Also included are the voices of professional skeptics about UFOs, including scientists who are leading the search for life forms beyond Earth elsewhere in the universe.

The program explores the facts behind the enduring mystery of the incident at Roswell, N.M., and looks into the strange stories of alien abductions. Among the UFO cases presented:

Minot Air Force Base, N.D., October 1968 — Sixteen airmen on the ground and the crew of an airborne B-52 witness a massive unidentified object hovering near the base.

Phoenix, March 1997 — Hundreds witness a huge triangular craft moving slowly over the city.

St. Clair County, Ill., January 2000 — Police officers in five adjoining towns all independently report witnessing a giant craft with multiple bright lights moving silently across the sky at a very low altitude.

Today if you report a UFO to the U.S. government you will be informed that the Air Force conducted a 22-year investigation that ended in 1969 and concluded that UFOs are not a threat to national security and are of no scientific interest. But as one of the world's leading theoretical physicists says in the program, "You simply cannot dismiss the possibility that some of these UFO sightings are actually sightings from some object created by … a civilization perhaps millions of years ahead of us in technology."

"Peter Jennings Reporting: UFOs — Seeing Is Believing" is produced by PJ Productions and Springs Media for ABC News. Mark Obenhaus and Tom Yellin are the executive producers.

Ignoring the fact that Peter Jennings is a ground sniffing, MSM weasel, let's discuss UFOs instead of the Politics of his news coverage.

How many Freepers have actually seen a UFO?

What are your stories?

I think people believe there are UFOs alright, meaning secret government craft that happens to be top secret that won't get recognized by the government as existing.

Almost NOBODY believes they are aliens, though we DO have plenty of illegal aliens in California.

I'm guessing it's Stanton Friedman who's being called "one of the world's leading theoretical physicists". If so, the writer of this press release needs to phone home and request a clue.

I'll go first.

Yes. I have seen a UFO.

My sighting occured at approximately 8:30PM on Tuesday, October 8, 1968.

I was the publicity director for a performance of Up With People in Sacramento, California, sponsored by Sing-Out Sacramento, the Sacramento Union Newspaper, and KOVR Television. The performance was that evening and it had started at 8:00 PM before a crowd of approximately 8000 people in Hughes Stadium at Sacramento City College.

I was standing behind the risers which were placed centered on the 50 Yard line facing west. The crowd was all on the stadium seats facing east. I was getting some really neat photographs of the Up With People cast sillouhetted against the stage lights.

The first act was close to ending when I noticed a large disk shaped object moving slowing from South to North above and behind the crowd on the bleechers. The object, to my eyes, was about twice to three times the size of a full moon, but appeared ovoid with the short axes east to west, long axes north to south. It glowed with a pearly luminescence and was moving quite steadily and silently. This "saucer" moved from my left, toward my right, and then stopped... about 20º to my right from being directly in front of me. I don't know how long it stayed there, but suddenly, it shot straight up... dwindling in a few seconds to a very small dot. It then moved at a high rate of speed north until it disappeared into the city lights.

The only other witnesses were members of the Up With People cast. A year later I was a student at Mackinac College, Michigan, and my roommate in the dorms was Ollie Howe, one of the cast members. He said the UFO was the talk of the UWP buses for days after that... some members saw it, others didn't and refused to believe those who saw it. Ollie saw it.

Remember I mentioned I was taking photographs? Stupid me stood there with my jaw no doubt on the tongue of my shoe and didn't take a picture!

All of your UFOs are belong to us!

(Actually, yes. When I was nine. There was also some missing time. Sometimes I stare at the night sky and say quietly "Take me home!" But then I'm still here. Oh, Well.)

Have I seen Unidentified Flying Objects? Yup.

Some UFOs might be ball lightning. My Mother tells the story of when a bolt of lightning hit a tree outside her school room in Poseyville, Indiana, when she was about nine years old.

The tree split and a ball of lightning came "slowly" toward their room, burned a six inch hole through the glass, dropped to the floor, rolled down the aisle between the desks one aisle over from hers, and out the door into the hallway, all the while making a loud "frying bacon sound". Out in the hallway it hit a radiator and exploded with a bang!

The scorched pathway was still visible in the school room floor fifty years later.

Are all UFOs some form of ball lightning plasma phenonomon? Page Nicola Tesla... he might know.

I'll give Jennings some props here. This is a subject that interests the world. Will the show come to conclusions? Of course not. There are none to be drawn.

But anyone who says there cannot be such things, given the infinity of time and space, simply has no idea...

Good point. Some things you and I might not be able to identify are perfectly legit aircraft flying with strange reflections.

The anthropic principle argues that the universe must have observers - ET. The same physics preclude ET visits. Go study, go figure.

(Time to whip out my best Rod Serling) "For your consideration:"

Jer 10:12 He hath made the earth by his power, he hath established the world by his wisdom, and hath stretched out the heavens by his discretion.
Col 1:16 For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether [they be] thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:
PLUS

Hbr 1:2 Hath in these last days spoken unto us by [his] Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds;
Hbr 11:3 Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God,
PLUS

Isa 45:18 For thus saith the LORD that created the heavens; God himself that formed the earth and made it; he hath established it, he created it not in vain, he formed it to be inhabited: I [am] the LORD; and [there is] none else.

Conclusion: yes, there are other worlds, and yes, they are inhabited. The problem is that Satan uses: 2Th 2:9 [Even him], whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders, to lead astray.

After all, the belief in other-world(ly) advanced, "alien" civilizations usually does not lead to Christ, or any kind of saving relationship with Jesus, or any desire to know Him (who made it all in the first place!)

Just as the enemy of truth would have it.

I saw a flying object that I could not identify back in 1985. It was in my hometown in Massachusetts in the back yard of a friend's house at approximately 10:00pm on Sunday, August 11th. The sky was clear but not pitch black. The moon was about 1/4 full and the stars were very bright.

My friend saw it as well but refuses to speak of it to this day. The object was roughly triangular and very black except for 3 lights...in a row from front to back...all 3 of them were red. It appeared mostly as a dark area that was moving and blocking out the stars as it moved over us.
This object was very large. Based on the aspect of its silhouette to the surrounding trees, I estimated its size at about 300 feet long on a side. It was was only 50 to 100 feet above the house's rooftop. It seemed to move slowly from East to West and made no noise that I could discern. We were in a rural area where there was no traffic noise. What was odd that there was no noise....and I mean NO noise from any source...crickets or otherwise.
The whole sighting lasted about 60 seconds as the object moved along over a wooded area where we were unable to follow it. It looked to be moving slowly but was moving faster than a running man on the ground....my guess was about 20 mph.

I suspected something of a military nature except for the apparently noiseless propulsion system it used. I'll never forget it. It was a striking looking vehicle.
