The writer insisted they were not being racist.
These letters were written in recent months in response to a Howard County (Maryland) Council resolution calling on the county school system to desegregate its schools. The letters’ target was a comprehensive redistricting proposal offered by Howard County schools superintendent Michael Martirano. The plan would ease overcrowding and, in Martirano’s words, “substantially improve equity and access to the best educational services” in the county’s schools. By redistributing students around the district and balancing the number of poor students in the district’s schools, the proposal would make the schools more economically integrated, and thus—in theory—more racially integrated.

One of the women I work with sent her kids to private school. They lived in Louisville.
One day they decided that they couldn’t afford private school any more and would send their kids to public school.
Louisville has forced bussing. So, what did the woman and her family do? The summer before the kids started school, they moved to an area with a school district that was more to their liking.
I believe we used to call that “white flight”. Of course, now you can just home school, thanks to the internet, Khanacademy, MIT online, etc.
We call it the Hip-Hop Culture. My nephew is a Phone Tech in the OH Prison system and he notes how the Hip-Hop culture has Crossed-Over to Poor Whites and created a much more integrate prison inmate population over the past 15 years.

Howard County was nice upper end DC suburbs and suburban office parks 30 years ago.

My mother moved rather than be exposed to busing any more. She moved because her first son was getting beat up at a majority black school. I’m glad she did because I was scared I was going to be next.
Many of the same adverse social behaviors we see in inner-city blacks are quite common with lower class whites in the UK. Theodore Dalrymple has documented this extensively. That it is becoming more common in lower class whites here is not a good thing.
I think all the advocates of busing should be bused to the most hard core crime ridden part of their city and made to work there .

I remember back in the late 60’s when forced busing started in Detroit. The black community was just as opposed to it as the white community was........It was a social experiment that failed miserably and further intensified the racial tensions between the whites and blacks.

When in college we would cut off the tails of nematodes, squash them on a slide and look at the patterns to categorize.
I always thought sitting people on a copy machine and looking at the patterns would be a better way than skin color to categorize people.
I think white flight is still happening in some areas.
Some distant exurban communities about 40 or 50 or 60 miles away from our major cities have seen major growth. Why are such areas growing so much?
One reason could be to find less expensive housing, as so many cities have become so expensive to live in. But there could well be other, unstated, reasons, for so many people being willing to have hour plus long commutes to work, and living so far away from the city and inner suburbs.
Speak to any teacher who is honest.
As others have mentioned there is a cultural divide among blacks and whites with importance to education. Blacks have a terrible gangsta hip hop, no respect to authority culture that is ingrained in them, even the wealthier ones.
Another group of liberals is getting mugged by reality. Howard County is full of people who moved there in search of a good school district and to avoid urban crime. It is not fair to call this white flight, because these people are not racist; they would be happy to live next door to middle and upper middle class black people who share their values and lifestyles. But they want no part of the urban underclass, black or Hispanic. In Maryland, however, you can run but you can’t hide. These folks bought their suburban McMansions and endure brutal commutes, only to find that their government is intent on importing the very problems they were fleeing in the first place.
