Surrounded by Coyotes while Hiking alone

Probably not the scenario to be in for a hiker, but what if you’re on a hike. And, you get this feeling that something is near you, not by another human but by a pack of howling coyotes.

When we hear coyotes howling its usually from a safe distance.
How would you handle a pack of coyotes howling closer to you?

Most of the time when I’m on a hike, I carry a pistol and depending on the state that allows me to carry my rifle. (AR)
In this video a hiker is unarmed on a hiking trail with coyotes nearby, how would you react?

Here’s the excerpt from Jessica Kirsh Youtube:
“This is raw, uncut footage I captured with my GoPro Hero 3+ Black Edition on my very first solo sunset hike as an Arizona resident. All of the sudden on my way back down a trail on Lookout Mountain ? in Phoenix, I found myself surrounded by howling coyotes in every direction! ?

Now at this point, I had only lived in the desert for a little over a year. So this was my first experience hearing coyotes howl this intensely, where I wasn’t in the “safety” of my fenced in backyard.

Watch me try to be as stealth as possible getting back to my car parked at the trail head! See the full surrounded by coyote video here.

And sadly, in the Left-coast state of California - authorities would rather you go hiking unprotected than to “allow you” to exercise your CONSTITUTIONAL right to carry a weapon for defense.

I would be armed in that situation.

A couple of years ago a young woman was killed by a pack of coyotes. I believe it was in Canada.

Better a coyote than a mountain lion.

Coyotes don’t attack people. Roadrunners maybe, but not people.

Pretty weak. You never see a coyote. I think the entire point of the video, if there is one, is that she’s an attractive young woman.

This happened to us in Sicily - surrounded by hungry, prowling coyotes in a park near Marsala close to the car lot (which was “guarded” by Mafioso enforcers). Would have scared me if I was in a Ralph Lauren store on 5th Avenue.

Coyotes howling in the distance. Not a big deal.

Wow. This piece has a different authors name yet the same horrendous writing and punctuation. Isn’t that weird?

She doesn’t even see “them” as far as I can see in the video. A single coyote can make itself sound like several. It’s what they do.

Wouldn't hunting silently be more productive than howling, which would scare off their prey?

I read an article maybe 40 years ago about a kid who was out hunting with his single shot .22. This was in Kansas and he fortunately was near to the only tree in the area.

After a bit, his Mother sensed that something was wrong. She and his Father mounted horses and rode out to check on him. Before they got to him a pack of dogs attacked them. Fortunately both were armed with hand guns and began shooting dogs.

The dogs broke off the attack and they found the kid in the tree. There was a single dead dog under the tree. The kid had his rifle but dropped his ammo while climbing the tree.

The next day they found several dead dogs tho the only one which had been killed immediately was the one under the tree.
