2016 Compilation of Wild Hog Hunts

There is nothing like a good ol’ day in the woods with the gang armed with their favorite long guns, rounding up some hogs and deer.

It definitely tests your skills to shoot ethical shots on the run, can help reduce the boar herd and manage deer herds.

Bottom line, we enjoy hunting, and this is just one tactic that when it comes together, it can be a fun hunt.

We all know that wild boar play havoc on the local ecosystem. They’re invasive, they’re potentially very dangerous, and they aren’t exactly good for the landscape.

That in mind, here’s a compilation of boar hunts and shooting. While these boars (and a few other animals) make tracks, the hunters put them down quickly in the name of conservation– and a good Pulled Pork sandwich or Hawaiian BBQ.

In most -if not all- cases, wildlife officials are more than happy to get rid of wild boars before they start making litters and breeding like mad– or worse, injuring somebody! With the amount of fat and muscle they have, they’re not necessarily easy to put down, and can have sharp tusks that cause serious damage.

It’s good to see hunters taking part in helping the environment in a way that makes for plenty of meat for the freezer in the process. See the footage here.

Awhile back, Jefferson Parish LA was offering trappers $394 each for wild hogs, and IIRC you could keep the hog, too.
They were tearing up the levees.

As dangerous as these animals are, a bolt action rifle with a limited magazine capacity would be my LAST choice.

Let’s hear some recommendations for a good hog hunting firearm and ammunition.

I believe the deal required setting out hog traps on the levees. Then shoot ‘em in the trap, I guess.
There are people around where I live who trap them and then release them into humongous pens, feed them, and raise the piglets for food.
I’ve seen them from a distance. I won’t go near, even though the traps and pens are galvanized steel and they can’t get out. LOL.

I have taken a double handful of hogs in my life -- some with a lever action .308, but most with a knife. There is a trick to it, the guide had dogs and the dogs would stop the hog so you could wade in there and stab it.

They are not your friend, but the danger is overestimated. Only got bitten once, and that was on the thumb. They mostly want to get away.

When I turned 45 I gave up on the knife and only used the rifle.

Anything 30 caliber or better. Lots of people use smaller calibers, but use the toughest legal expanding bullet you can find.

Diseases and parasites[edit]

Wild boars are known to host at least 20 different parasitic worm species, with maximum infections occurring in summer. Young animals are vulnerable to helminths like Metastrongylus, which are consumed by boars through earthworms, and cause death by parasitising the lungs. Wild boar also carry parasites known to infect humans, including Gastrodiscoides, Trichinella spiralis, Taenia solium, and Balantidium coli. Wild boar in southern regions are frequently infested with ticks (Dermacentor, Rhipicephalus, and Hyalomma) and hog lice. The species also suffers from blood-sucking flies, which it escapes by bathing frequently or hiding in dense shrubs.[3]

Swine plague spreads very quickly in wild boar, with epizootics being recorded in Germany, Poland, Hungary, Belarus, the Caucasus, the Far East, Kazakhstan, and other regions. Foot-and-mouth disease can also take on epidemic proportions in boar populations. The species occasionally, but rarely contracts Pasteurellosis, hemorrhagic septicemia, tularemia and anthrax. Wild boar may on occasion contract swine erysipelas through rodents or hog lice and ticks.[3]

A lot of guys hunt them with AR-15’s. But, there’s ferrell hogs on the lease I’m on and I shoot them with my Remington bolt action 270. Does the job just fine. The danger with ferrell hogs is getting in the middle of a pack of them and they become agitated and knock you on the ground. If they get you down then you’re hog meat. So, don’t walk among them.

What did DH carry? 44 magnum I think? It will knock’em down just fine. I have a Ruger Blackhawk 30 cal carbine 7 1/2” barrel with a scope on it that I keep laying in the seat of my pickup when driving around the lease. I was on a lease down near Langtry, Tx several years ago and there were a bunch ofJavelinas on it. So, came up on one while riding around one afternoon. Stopped and shot him right between the eyes. He squealed, shook his head and ran off in the brush. Lesson learned; 30 cal carbine round wasn’t up to the job.
