WWII Lethal Dart Gun - Code name Bigot
AShooting Journal ^ | 8/2/2016 | J Hines

Once upon a time during WWII a lethal dart gun code name “Bigot” was created to be used by commandos to covertly eliminate sentries, this dart gun was constructed from a M1911 .45 caliber pistol. The Office of Strategic Services predecessors of the CIA developed this clandestine weapon, its unknown as to what advantage this has over a silenced pistol.

The weapon never made it out of the research and development department, but this didn't stop Ian McCollum from Forgotten Weapons to get his hands on one to check out, see the video and Ian's observation.

It certainly is one hell of a “dart.”

I kept reading and reading but the author was terrible and I quit before actually finding out what I wanted to know. Did they use actual blanks or just a powderless primed case as the propellant?

The guy just babbled on and on about nothing, actually.

IIRC, it uses a sealed blank. The blank expands, but the gas is held in. Even quieter than a suppressed weapon.

That is one, big, effing DART!

I have seen 5.56mm NATO flachette rounds, when I was doing some computer repairs at Lake City. The only ones I saw were prototypes, I don’t know if they ever went into production.

I couldn’t finish the video either. I would imagine they used a squib round something like what the M1 used for its grenade launcher. I doubt a mere primer would have the power to push a dart that size (more like a harpoon!) to fatal velocity.
