Why I Changed My Mind and Joined the #NeverTrump Movement

DAVID FRENCH March 2, 2016

Let me begin by saying that I was wrong. Weeks ago I said on a number of radio interviews that while I opposed Trump in the primary, I’d back him if he won the GOP nomination. I hadn’t yet seen — or had been unwilling to believe — the full extent of his contempt for the truth, his fondness for far-left conspiracy theories, and his sheer malice. When I saw Trump in full, my decision was easy: Never Trump. I have spent my entire adult life advocating against abortion and working to protect the unborn. I didn’t endure the taunts and jeers of my law-school classmates, work countless days and nights away from home to protect the free-speech rights of pro-life protestors, and defend the freedoms of the unsung heroes in crisis-pregnancy centers only to vote for a man who’s a walking Planned Parenthood commercial.

Last night, even in his alleged “uniter” mode, Trump went out of his way to once again praise the nation’s largest abortionist — the killer of millions of children — and call his critics “so-called conservatives.” This language will never — not ever — unite the conservative movement. While my own military service can’t compare to the sacrifices and courage of the true American heroes of the Iraq War, I didn’t leave my home and risk my life in the fight against the world’s worst jihadists to vote for a man who apparently believes that I was little more than the stooge of a vast conspiracy to lie our way into war. Moreover, I cannot abide the notion of voting for a man whose “war strategy” is a child-killing war crime and who said out loud that more bombs plus..........

Oh well, I guess he likes the new rules of engagement that has cost us so many lives.

Even apart from that our current administration regularly launches Hellfire missiles into houses in Pakistan and other locales where noncombatant women and children are present in order to eliminate Taliban members. Does anybody really think that the women and children don't get killed by the explosion?

Whether or not that strategy is a good one, anyone who argues that Trump's comments about rules of engagement are somehow unthinkable without simultaneously protesting the policies of the Obama and Bush administrations is just a hypocritical hack.

The sorry part is that Trump does more than his fair share of making Twitter a cesspool and yet with your opinion - you still support him.

So now believe the CNN polls today again in the Cruz crazies world ?

Cruz is considered a extreme weirdo and sleazy lying lawyer who stole votes from Dr Carson and us owned by Wall Street and Goldman Sachs !
That is what Conn is peddling as a wining combination ?

This is one of the reasons, I suspect, that the polls generally show Trump losing to Clinton or Sanders. Too many Republicans won’t vote for him.

I’m not sure I agree with Trump 70-85% myself. I think his various tariff plans and some of his other efforts to force people to “buy American” are going to backfire big time, and the people who will bear the brunt of that are the poor and the working class. I’m also deeply concerned that the national debt seems to be completely off his radar. He just brushes it off with, “My tax plan will fix that” or “I’m going to get us jobs and fix the economy.” I’m skeptical.

I do think he’s right that some of his other planned actions (lowering taxes) will get more money flowing in, but I don’t see it as anything like sufficient. And I, too, was annoyed by the mention of Planned Parenthood in that speech. Trump can like Planned Parenthood all he wants, but he should not agree with forcing the American people to fund Planned Parenthood.

The fact that he resists agreeing to defund Planned Parenthood when he must know that this is an issue the American people are deeply divided over is not a good sign. It’s one thing for a political leader to insist on military spending and activity despite a sizable pacifist minority (which, to be honest, we do not have right now anyhow), but it’s quite another to be funding a group that performs controversial medical procedures.

Protecting the people and dealing with our enemies is part of government’s job, and always has been, and that requires using force, which some people dislike. Funding an elective medical procedure is not the Federal government’s job, and neither is funding an organization that spends so much lobbying.

Frankly, I don’t think that taxpayers should EVER be expected to pay an organization that pays lobbyists. Frankly, I think it ought to be illegal for the government to give funds to any organization that lobbies, period, paragraph, the end. No taxpayer should ever be forced to pay a corporation that lobbies the government. Even if the taxpayer’s money doesn’t go directly to lobbying, it frees the organization up to direct more money into lobbying.

Trump does not get this, and that’s a bad sign.

How is Cruz going to end abortion? How did President Reagan do it?

How is Cruz going to get his agenda passed by the GOPe and McConnell if he doesn’t “collude” with them?

Side with Gopes and libs. Whatever it takes.

Sorry trumpkin some of us are concerned about the 50 million + abortions committed since Roe. Some of us are outraged that taxpayer dollars are flowing into the coffers of the largest abortion business in the country.

Relating this to trump, we are outraged by his continuing obtuseness on the funding of planned parenthood. This is especially outrageous given what we have learned from the CMP videos about the barbarous monsters who run that abortion business.

If you care to inform is about the wonderful things that PP does besides the wholesale slaughter of innocent children in the womb that would ever justify any funding under any circumstances?

I have posed this question to a number of you fellow travellers and they were too gutless to answer, perhaps you will break the string of cowardice by trumpkins.

Oh well. I voted for Cruz yesterday, but the other “regular” candidates have not worked. I’ll try Trump. He will have good people around him and he won’t curl into a ball and not respond like most republicans. Hillary called him sexist about 6 weeks ago or so and he let both Hillary and Bill have it. He shut her up. She hasn’t uttered a word about Trump being sexist since.

A few things that Cruz would do to put a giant dent in the mass murder/abortion industry.

First Medical Standards, force abortion mills to adhere to the same standards as hospitals that perform operations.

Second, defund Planned Parenthood. They are the largest abortion murderers in the country take away their taxpayer dollars and identify them for the pariah organization that they are.

Third have the DoJ prosecute the lawbreakers identified in the CMp videos selling baby parts and in their latest video, admitting that they murder children delivered alive then butcher them and sell their parts. This is first degree murder.

Trump is either a liar or incredibly stupid insisting that abortion isn’t PP primary function and sayig they do many valuable things, nonsense.

I challenge YOU to name one thing they do that is essential and not being offered by other health care providers that don’t do abortions.

You are too late. I voted for Cruz yesterday knowing he would lose, but that's OK. Trump is too far ahead, especially when the winner takes all states are just around the corner. I am listening to Levin right now and he's saying Cruz isn't that far behind. Too late.

In 2008, Hillary won the primary vote, but lost the caucus vote and lost the nomination to Obama. She was oh so close almost the whole way, but came up slightly short.

Trump will need a wound from out of the blue to destroy his candidacy. If Trump has not alienated voters to this point, what will? I mean, really, what will?

I mean, Romney was ripped to shreds by the people here for flip flopping on abortion and a few other issues. Trump praises Planned Parenthood loudly a number of times and these same people could care less. Go figure.

No need to challenge me about PP. If up to me I’d burn them all to the ground and have the employees arrested for murder.

Unfortunately, it’s not. Trump has said he’d de-fund PP because of abortion. He says the other part to not alienate people not as adamant as us.

And to your original points; I think they are excellent ideas to curtail, as much as constitutionally possible, the horrors of abortion.

These could be done by whoever is President.
