Immigrants historically have always worked harder than native Americans. That’s why it’s so good to have immigrants.
How many of these shops are equal opportunity employers?
I don't care HOW hard you work, how conscientious, how capable and any other adjective you want to put on it ... little tiny fingers have a purpose we just can't fulfill ... get over it.
I have no idea. I wonder if the farms in CA are equal opportunity employers. Seems to me they hire only Mexicans.
Incredibly talented people. And nice, too. They run these stores in NY and NJ.
I love them. I can afford to have pedicures now. Makes me forget I’m poor for an hour or so. LOL
I understand! In NYC, they are also SOOO cheap.
it’s a cash business, mostly. I’ll bet the sales are way underreported to the IRS. The ladies are sweet and work very hard. I have seen them taken advantage of by male shop owners, though, e.g. having to hand over their tips.
Because men are EEEVIL! Seriously, I hate to see anyone taken advantage of. I think more of the women are opening their own shops now.
We have Vietnamese nail salons in Houston too. Also the fish market where we buy all our seafood is owned and operated by a Vietnamese family. I will never forget when we went in right after 9/11 Hi was wearing a cap and a t-shirt with American flags on them. there was no doubt where his loyalty lay. For those of you in Houston Fountainview Fish Market on on Fountain View st one block south of Westheimer. He will also fry you up some shrimp and french fries for lunch right on the spot!
All good , but you also have to insist on sterilized instruments before they use them for your mani or pedi ... Have treated many a patient with an oozing toe or finger staph infection picked up in these places. The good ones will open up a new kit every time.
Do they have to be “Vietnemese Americans” for gosh sakes?! Asians are usually very proud to be just plain Americans.
"...really didn't mind the tiny little brushes, it was their idea of curling my tail that had me hit 4th gear before I hit the door"
I guess that they are Chinese by their round nostrils (only folks to have them) and then I ask.
I USED to go to them for acrylic nails but their work is substandard BECAUSE they do every client in an hour. That just isn't long enough. The nails chip and break within days...and thus one has to go in for "repairs." Their prices are lower for a reason but end up being more expensive with all the repairs and time spent.
The person I have now is SUPER.
However, I agree with your premise of them being hard workers. That they are.
No I don’t think men are generally evil. It is just my observation from patronizing many different shops in California. The owner sits around and counts the money while the ladies tend to the calloused, sweaty American can feet. I tip well and hope they get to keep it.
The Vietnamese Chinese owners are never around. They are usually some Chinese fellow in southeast Asia who owns the business.
SOME women, though, DO end up owning the shop. They work long years, save up and buy the business. I don't really know what kind of bosses they turn out to be...undoubtedly BETTER.
They hire only their own fellow Vietnamese Chinese. THAT I've seen over the years.
There, all the Vietnamese run donut shops. :-P
My husband had an Asian doctor (Chinese, I think). When he was performing his prostate exam, he told my husband “be thankful I’m not American doctor - they have big hands”. ROFL
