People were dying, but rather slowly. Bubonic plague (Black Death) would prove to be more efficient and quicker than famine, much quicker.

In Siena, 75% of the people were cut down like grain before the scythe, and about 75% also died at Pisa. As described in the Cronica Senese of Agnolo di Tura, “Father abandoned child, wife, husband, one brother, another….No one could be found to bury the dead for money or for friendship.”

The purpose of the “Bring Out Your Dead” ping list (formerly the “Ebola” ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.
So far the false positive rate is 100%.
At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the “Bring Out Your Dead” threads will miss the beginning entirely.
*sigh* Such is life, and death...

Went to the doctor this week. The “arrive ten minutes early” paperwork was a little different, it just asked some other routine health questions, then “have you traveled in Africa, or somewhere outside the country?” And when the doctor came in, he reiterated those, and said “we have to ask that”.

I am surprised the “have you traveled in West Africa” question wasn’t the first one. Most places now they don’t even start the routine questions until they determine your recent travel and exposure history.
