100 YEARS OF FLIGHT
By Marilyn Dash
December 2003
On December 17, 2003 we will celebrate the Centennial of Powered Flight. Let's think about this for a moment. In 100 years we have gone from the seaside dunes of Kitty Hawk, NC and the 12 seconds that changed the world -- to the International Space Station hovering somewhere in space. We've landed on the moon, we've made the world a smaller place by providing the opportunity for travel, and more importantly, I learned how to fly.
The author wrote this ten years ago to celebrate the 100th anniversary of heavier-than-air powered flight and how flying changed her life.
If I had my wish come true, I'd like to have a Beech T-34C Turbo Mentor for my trusty steed. The T-34C is a tandem seat, turboprop version of the famous Beech Bonanza, except it has a conventional tail instead of the Bonanza's “Vee” or “butterfly” tail.
The T-34C is fast, forgiving, and fully aerobatic.

Flying can influence people in very positive ways even if they do not take up flying for a living.
We participate with Young Eagles, a program to get youngsters introduced into flying. It helps them see a much bigger world than their little playgrounds or neighborhoods. It works wonders. We have all kinds of people now flying professionally and privately, and some not at all, but they look at their more successful lives and credit that program.
