Bacteria in mouth may trigger colorectal cancer

WASHINGTON, Aug. 14 (Xinhua) -- U.S. researchers said Wednesday they have discovered how a common oral bacterium can trigger a cascade of changes leading to colorectal cancer.

The microorganism called fusobacteria, which are found in the mouth, may stimulate bad immune responses and turn on cancer growth genes to generate colorectal tumors, two studies published in the journal Cell Host & Microbe revealed.

Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related death in the United States. Recent studies have shown that fusobacteria from the mouth are also abundant in tissues from colorectal cancer patients but it was not known whether they directly contribute to the formation of tumors.

In one of the new studies, Professor Yiping Han from the Case Western Reserve University School of Dental Medicine and her collaborators discovered that fusobacteria rely on a molecule called FadA, which is found on the surface of these bacterial cells, to attach to and invade human colorectal cancer cells.

FadA then turns on cancer growth genes and stimulates inflammatory responses in these cells and promotes tumor formation, Han said.

Han's team also found that the FadA gene levels are 10 to 100 times higher than normal in precancerous and malignant colon polyps. Moreover, they identified a compound known as peptide that can prevent FadA's effects on cancer cells.

"We showed that FadA is a marker that can be used for the early diagnosis of colorectal cancer and identified potential therapeutic targets to treat or prevent this common and debilitating disease," Han said.

I wonder if the bacteria mentioned in the article is associated with gum disease. My dentist often mentions that gum disease contributes to a variety of serious health problems.

That’s BS. We’re winning all kinds of elections. We’re winning at all levels except one office at Pennsylvania ave. Conservatives have as a big a foot print today in state governments than we’ve ever had, and we’ve controlled the House for all but four years of the last two decades.

The last surviving passenger from the Hindenburg passed away today.

She was 102.

She injured her leg when she jumped from the burning Zeppelin inferno.

She had to use a cane for the rest of her life

coz she always walked with a blimp.

My doctor told me years ago to gargle with hydrogen peroxide every day after I brush my teeth.

Yes, that was his point and very soon the taste doesn't bother you. My doctor said he did it every day. Also my dermatologist said to put a little bit of Bactroban (antibiotic cream) up each nostril several times a week to control bacteria in your nostrils.

I use tea-tree oil to prevent ear infections.

Did the hydrogen peroxide discolor your teeth?

Mine is scheduled for next month. Second time around. The procedure, in itself, isn’t bad; it’s the preceding 24 hours that suck.

I meant to add, I forget to gargle every day but I always gargle with hydrogen peroxide if I feel a sore throat starting. It makes a huge difference. If I catch a cold I gargle with HP and I wash my sinuses out with warm salt water using my Neti Pot at least 3 times a day.

It will keep me from having a sinus infection. I always ended up with a sinus infection after a cold and the infection would finally sent me to the doctor for antibiotics. I have not had a sinus infection for several years, ever since I started using my Neti Pot.

I agree with your second statement, but not the first. It is conservatives who are winning. 2010 was a conservative wave. 2012 was a Republican bungling. The Republicans react to polling and act weak to be nice. Conservatives are making a case for another direction. We have conservative governors all over the country, some in blue states like WI. We have conservatives taking over statehouses, winning Congressional seats and Senate seats. Five years ago we had DeMint and a few occasional good conservatives in the Senate. Today we have a conservative coalition leading the way.

"My dentist often mentions that gum disease contributes to a variety of serious health problems."

This is a must-read thread from 2011. I've studied it multiple times. Somewhere in the middle of it, another Freeper with a biochem background shows up and attempts to bash the whole thing; he was not successful IIRC.

The PSA is worse than the “probe”. A high reading from a PSA test will probably result in a much more invasive and worthless prostate biopsy.

My urologist put me through two of those (they are very lucrative for him), that he claimed showed some “suspicious cells”. When I refused a third one, he admitted that was reasonable, considering my age and other medical factors.

I knew he wanted the $3,000 fee for the exam, but he admitted if the exam disclosed cancer, treatment might not be advised.
