Bacteria in mouth may trigger colorectal cancer

WASHINGTON, Aug. 14 (Xinhua) -- U.S. researchers said Wednesday they have discovered how a common oral bacterium can trigger a cascade of changes leading to colorectal cancer.

The microorganism called fusobacteria, which are found in the mouth, may stimulate bad immune responses and turn on cancer growth genes to generate colorectal tumors, two studies published in the journal Cell Host & Microbe revealed.

Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related death in the United States. Recent studies have shown that fusobacteria from the mouth are also abundant in tissues from colorectal cancer patients but it was not known whether they directly contribute to the formation of tumors.

In one of the new studies, Professor Yiping Han from the Case Western Reserve University School of Dental Medicine and her collaborators discovered that fusobacteria rely on a molecule called FadA, which is found on the surface of these bacterial cells, to attach to and invade human colorectal cancer cells.

FadA then turns on cancer growth genes and stimulates inflammatory responses in these cells and promotes tumor formation, Han said.

Han's team also found that the FadA gene levels are 10 to 100 times higher than normal in precancerous and malignant colon polyps. Moreover, they identified a compound known as peptide that can prevent FadA's effects on cancer cells.

"We showed that FadA is a marker that can be used for the early diagnosis of colorectal cancer and identified potential therapeutic targets to treat or prevent this common and debilitating disease," Han said.

No, my FRiend. Colon cancer is a serious killer - I survived stage 3 after a lemon sized tumor was removed 6 years ago, had six months of chemo and serious complications that nearly killed me afterward. Nothing to do with the gay thing. It does run in families, my grandfather died from it. In my case, I got to see miracle healing and have the gift of more time with my family. Medical treatment has made great progress on this illness. I am very happy to be here and alive and participating in life!

Glad you survived. On a related note, I wonder how many men have died from prostate cancer because they didn’t want their doctor’s finger up their butt for 3 seconds. I mean, really?

Don’t need to go to the doctor for that anymore. TSA has people that do that.

OK, real question: after getting the rectal finger wave for years in the military, can I now count on the PSA test to replace the undignified invasive prostate exam?

Hadn’t thought about it before, but some contemporary doctors have been acting a little weird. ;-)

Nope it killed my mother and several others in the family...

I suspect you comment is supposed to be funny but it illustrates how out of touch so called conservatives are with the real world.

I'm becoming more convinced every day that Conservatism is not winning elections because Conservative voters only listen to talk radio (15% tops of the electorate) Fox (geezers over 65) and blogs like this which are so often just an echo chamber of the same folks saying the same thing year after year..

IMHO the problem is the messengers not the message. We have lost the battle of the message by failing to recognize personality is what wins an election in today's America.

The vast majority of those here and conservatives in general have squandered what little political capital they had left by attacking O and the Dims personally. Face it, folks like O and the Dims better than they like conservatives at this point in time.

The fools in Washington of both parties can continue to play the day to day game of patty cake but the country as a whole has simply tuned them out. The electorate here is becoming much like the third world in that they have long since concluded that the politicians have nothing to say that matters in their lives and are useless... America's greatness was based on our ability to do big things and we simply no longer have the political leaders capable of even deciding to get out of bed in the morning let alone conceiving of any "big" idea that could possibly benefit the country..the name of the game for all politicians is get mine while I can.

Maybe I’m jaded. After four children and my midwife’s hands in undignified places for legitimate reasons, it doesn’t bother me any more.

Sell your tripe at DU. Obozo's policies and agenda is what has been"attacked, NOT his skin color. Obozo isn't "loved" for his personality, which is contrived! He's "loved" for the false promise he brought!

Same here, after 10 children. I had a colonoscopy with no anesthesia ... just a little labor breathing and a motherly nurse patting my hand.

Get your colonoscopy, everyone. Dying of colon cancer is bad.
