Catholics now moving toward Romney, really? Gee what an honest poll can tell us!

In 2004 I ran the field operations for Catholics Against Kerry (CaK).

We worked hard at the grassroots level in Ohio Pennsylvania and New Mexico among other states. During the last 10 days of the campaign we saturated the Youngstown Ohio/ New Castle Pennsylvania area with dozens of radio spots every day that brought home the point that John Kerry was a phony “Catholic” who supported abortion on demand.

The political wisdom about Youngstown’s importance to the final tally in Ohio is that a Democrat MUST get more than 65% in Youngstown or he will not win Ohio.

Al Gore got 65% in 2000 and lost. Our efforts moved Kerry down to 63% and he lost Ohio by almost exactly what he lost Youngstown by. The fact that no Democrat has ever lost the Catholic vote and won the Presidency is well known to the political community.

This is why up to now they have lied about where the Catholic vote is. Being Democrats of course they have overplayed their hand. Some polls actually showed that Gay “marriage” was favored by 15% among mass attending Catholics.

But that has finally changed a new POLITICO/George Washington University Battleground Pol shows Mitt Romney is now winning Catholics in general but far more importantly Romney is leading among adherent Catholics who attend Mass regularly by a huge 59/36.

This represents a 22 point improvement over the 50/49 edge with adherent Catholics John McCain received in 2008.

This turnaround has not “just happened.” It is the product of a huge outreach to Catholics, especially adherent Catholics across the country and especially in the “swing states.”

In Ohio Catholic groups have been executing a plan that will see them contact these Mass attending Catholics 6 times before Election Day.

I assume the Steubenville crowd will be out in force in Ohio to let Catholics know not to support the abortion on demand candidate. I will pray a rosary for all of these efforts in Ohio.

I listen to Catholic radio and TV, read various Catholic publications, and of course, listen to what my and other Bishops say.

Until this year, I only heard platitudes from the Church regarding elections. Now I am seeing a truly organized push to educate Catholics and talk about how to vote. Obama is rarely ever named - but the message is clear: Obama, his administration, and Obamacare are truly anti-Catholic.

I'm a conservative Catholic who lives in a very Catholic area. My pastor is typically apolitical, but he gave the strongest pro-life message I've ever heard at Mass last Sunday, and he specifically referenced it in terms of who we support at the ballot box. More importantly, we've been holding vigils for the protection of religous freedom and the end of abortion for months, again, something not normally done in an election year around here.

I believe the HHS mandate doomed Obama, way back in the summer. Practicing Catholics will are going to vote this crowd out.

interesting ... need more info. Implies they have found a way to reach and target “adherent Catholics”.

1. Tough to identify.
2. Door knocking is limited in effectiveness. People are not home.

Interesting though.

Same here in Missouri, strong messages about the outcome of the coming election an its impact upon the church, pushed hard by the Archbishop.
Each exit from the parking lot has members holding big signs stating “Vote Your Catholic Beliefs”.
The church is taking this election very seriously and I expect the message to get stronger and stronger each week as the election draws near.
The homilies are drawing applause from the members of the church. I feel there will be a strong clear message sent by Mass attending Catholics on election day.

Funny thing is, a lot of non-Catholics think we Catholics hear nothing from the pulpit but "no to contraception, forincation, and gay sex" all the time. In fact, most of us have eard nothing about it for decades, except -- abortion, yes, I have heard preaching about that, n response to incessant nudging from our (lay-lead) Respect Life committees.

So I was supriised and pleased that one of our deacons gave 2 homilies in 2 weeks (covering at least 5 Masses) clearly and specifically referencing contraception, divorce/remarriage and gay marriage as being opposed to Divine and Natural Law, and warning about attacks on our religious liberty.

I sent him fan-emails, asked if he would send me the text, and then sent the texts out to my whole Catholic e-mail list.

Things do seem to be turning around. Fast enough? Strong enough? We shall see.

“Things do seem to be turning around”

I think it will be enough to make a big difference in the final outcome in Nov. If this is going to be a close race, then a small movement by Catholics can have a big impact in swing states.
