The First Family's weekend getaway in Bar Harbor ended on Sunday as Air Force One took off a little after 10:00 in the morning. For the folks around the Bar Harbor area things have started to return to normal.
Matthew Schneider, the General Manager at the Qarterdeck restaurant, says he's already looking ahead to the rest of the summer. "It's gonna be business as usual," he says. "We have a big cruise ship coming in tomorrow. 2200 people coming off that boat. Our normal everyday tourists are here, yeah it's back to business as usual."
But for some of the people around here the first family's visit has left a long lasting impression. Mark Currier had been waiting tables at Stewman's Lobster Pound in downtown Bar Harbor for less than a week when the Obama's were seated in his section on Saturday. "I had about 15 minutes notice he was coming in," he says, "I was like this is unreal right now. I can't believe the president is at my restaurant and that I'm gonna be waiting on him."
The president and first lady ordered lobster while their daughters Sasha and Malia had shrimp. "He ate the whole thing. He knew exactly how to crack it and everything," says Currier." And the big question how good of a tipper is the president? "He was pretty good says Currier with a chuckle.
The Obama's certainly made the most of their weekend, seeing just about all that MDI had to offer. "They were out in public," says Shneider, "a lot of people didn't think they were going to be. They were out having ice cream at the ice cream places, having dinner at the local restaurants, it was a fun weekend for them and I think for us in town."
While President Obama and his family are gone the impact they've had on this small community will hopefully reverberate for a long time to come. "We were on the cover of every newspaper in the world this weekend," Schneider says.
Around these parts, we say “Welcome to Maine, spend your money, then go home.”
LOL! It was probably about 1986 when I last had lobster. At a friend’s cottage on Cape Cod! Nicknamed the “KKK” for Kalie’s (or something) Kape Kottage.
Doesn’t Michelle know that lobster is full of cholesterol? I thought we were all supposed to eat healthy? Oh, wait...’we’re’ supposed to eat ‘healthy’, not the Politburo.
In Chincoteaugue when I was about 14 years old.
Then again, both my parents worked full time jobs just to keep a roof over our heads and it was “the Carter Years”.
I didn’t actually have lobster...I had lobster newburg and sauteed crab.
[crab is cheap when you’re eating it 30 feet from where it was caught]
I have not had a “vacation” for decades.
No time for such luxuries and no money.
Thanks to him murdering the economy in cold blood, our online business is on its last legs, 66 year old hubby is busting his recently triple-bypassed hump 24/7 to keep us afloat and the odds of another “vacation” in my lifetime are slim and none.
Hope he and his family -really- enjoyed -theirs-.
It's just that I am so sick to death of ordinary people who serve these two leeches gushing like pre-teen schoolgirls. Just ONCE I'd like to see someone quoted who said something like, "Yeah they entered the room, all right. I told my boss to let me take my break now because I don't want to be infested by those bastards."
I want to know if the dog came back on his own airplane?
He’s a water dog, isn’t he?
He could’ve swam home.
I’d love to go to Maine. Used to live there when I was little (18 mos to 7 yrs) so it would be fun to go back and see it as an adult. I don’t guess that will happen any time soon. We are not rich Repubs. We go on mini-road trips on occasion. 2, 3, 4 days usually. We bring our own food and eat at Taco Bell or Wendys when we get bored with that. I’m so glad that man and his family are living high on the hog while they are doing what they can to destroy any hopes and dreams the working class may have.
Well he is part cracka. ;)
Jeez, the gushing by these two "men" is sickening. I don't know about leaving a lasting impression on the "whole" town, but these two are drizzling down both legs.
I could eat lobster everyweek but never got into it.
Doesn’t taste like anything without clarified butter and could do without that many calories.
I have had it grilled and it is delicious but still don’t care if I eat it or any other crustacean.
Doesn’t taste bad, just not into it.
LOL
And that only counts the "official" vacations. It doesn't account for all the Sepia Savior's weekend jaunts to Camp David, the trip to NY for a show, the many, many glitzy parties at the White Palace, and so forth. It is said that, in his brief time since the coronation, Obomba has played golf as many times as Bush did in eight years. And yet the Miracle of Obomba is that he can do virtually nothing at his job and still **** up the country.
Revelation 13:17 And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.
And so it begins...
You and me both, kemosabe. For a moment I thought the guy was gonna talk about getting a tingle down his leg.
The O administration has left a lasting impression on the gulf and not in the “good” way. While he was telling Americans to vacation there, he goes to Maine? Couldn’t they have vacationed even for a short time in the Gulf? I would love to see LA and the gulf states (saving and saving for the future and hope that this opportunity is allowed at some point.
I don’t think alot of people think of the Gulf Coast as a place to beachfront vacation. This spill has shown how much scenery and resorts there are to those of us who picture only the Atlantic or Pacific coasts are where the action is.
The Obamas could’ve given the area alot more favorable publicity by vacationing there. But selfishly true to form, they had to go the elite route.
Well, some people leave lasting marks on their underwear. The cause is very similar, but the latter is less annoying, and can be removed with a little effort.
Why is he so skinny if he eats like a king/queen on OUR dime????
