From the Sciences and Cosmology web page:
"Want me to tell you something that will blow your mind or make you lose sleep?
Well, look at this picture.
Each of those dots you see is a GALAXY...
And each GALAXY has roughly 100BILLION STARS.
Also, each STAR has at least 1 PLANET.
Now how many galaxies do you think there can be in that picture?
And this is just a photograph of a very little parcel of the universe.
This makes me lose sleep, thinking about how so insignificant we really are. Lol."
I checked the link and could not find the image.
Whether any others have life on them is still unknown.
But it is probably safe to assume that the earth is the only planet with chocolate...or Super Bowl commercials.
.
That’s a WOW even if you aren’t stoned.
5.56mm
Pretty much every star so far observed does have planets. Apparently it’s part of the star making process. It’s a logical extrapolation to assume that any star will have planets
All I know us what Hon. Sheila Jackson Lee told me the other day: The moon is mostly gas. And living there would be possible because of the atmosphere. But the sun is high-heat environment, and it would be a little bit harder to live there. But maybe if you came at night-time it would be OK. So let’s fund it.
It looks like a cleanup is needed on aisle 16.
I want to know what percentage of the universe we have actually studied in depth, not just observed and labeled.
The truth is, we don’t even know what we don’t know yet. And how long would it take to really study just 1% of what we can see? Millions of years to study trillions of galaxies?
> Wow.
Yep. And 10% is earmarked for the big guy.
“ALL THESE WORLDS ARE YOURS, EXCEPT EUROPA.
ATTEMPT NO LANDING THERE.
USE THEM TOGETHER. USE THEM IN PEACE.”
I couldn't either. Facebook is weird, something will pop up in your feed, then when you attempt to find it in the parent page, it's hard to find. Facebook jiggers around with post visibility too much. I blame it on that.
I would like to zoom out enough to see it this is God’s finger or toe.
In 1995, the Hubble Space Telescope was used to investigate a tiny, ‘empty’ part of the night sky. A section of the night sky, smaller than a dime, that appeared to have no stars, was investigated by the Hubble Space Telescope over many days. What Hubble discovered changed everything. In this tiny portion of the night sky were thousands of previously unknown galaxies. It is called the Hubble Deep Field. Before this, the questimate of the total number of galaxies was about 200 million. We now know there are trillions.
With the new James Webb Space Telescope, we are able to ‘see’ even farther into the universe (infrared). What is beyond what Webb can detect.......? Who knows. Maybe some day the Webb Space Telescope will perform a similar examination in a small portion of the cosmos, and find even more galaxies.
We are amused when scientists tell us the age of the universe. God has blessed us with curiosity and the ability to develop tools to investigate and discover worlds and galaxies. I hope that future textbooks will use the term ‘known universe.’
For it is certain that, in the end, we do not control the vertical, nor do we control the horizontal. We can, today, sharpen some images into crystal clarity. Other images and information, not so much.
Nice! Animal House reference!
You are a fluke of The Universe
You have no right to be here.
And whether you can hear it or not,
The Universe is laughing behind your back.
Therefore, make peace with your god
Whatever you conceive him to be-
Hairy thunderer, or cosmic muffin.
With all its hopes, dreams, promises and urban renewal
The world continues to deteriorate.
GIVE UP!
Still room for rent in the Böotes Void.
So there’s that.
Depends what you call “insignificant”. The Almighty Creator God of the entire universe showed His infinite love for this planet, and sent His son Jesus TO this planet to redeem our fallen condition and assure us that He intends to make this planet His Home Base for the next millennia at least. Each of us citizens of the planet are offered eternal life and a role in the future life on the planet, merely by inviting this Jesus into our private, personal life, and pledging fealty to Jesus and His Father God. I think that’s pretty significant.
He’s Him.
I gave a sermon (as a layman) and used that famous Hubble photograph as a prop (back in the day with it printed out on a 3’ x 5’ poster board.
Used it to make the point of the Power of God and the Grace of God in much the same way you did. I also quipped, perhaps God made the Universe so big just for us to enjoy and to contemplate. Or maybe it is just like our parents used to do - swinging their arms wide open and saying “I love you THIS much” - perhaps this is one of God’s way of saying “I love you THIS much!” (Well, along with sacrificing his only Son, Jesus Christ.)
C.S. Lewis wrote some sci-fy. He pondered life on other planets. And if they had sinned or not. He said something like if they had never sinned, they would never have been able to experience, like we have, the wonderful Grace of God and the healing through His son Jesus Christ.
