Waring's claims are not backed up by scientific evidence space boffins have not found any clues that there is, or ever was, intelligent life on Mars.
Alien expert Nigel Watson, author of 'UFOs of the First World War, said Waring's claims were little more than fairy tale.
"It is a stretch of the imagination to see this rock as representing the head of Socrates," Watson told The Sun.
"Certainly Mars has not been habitable for human existence for a very long time, so it is impossible that he could have lived there or had a statue made of him a few thousand years ago.
"As a philosopher he might have liked Waring's 'thinking outside the box', but he would have posed plenty of questions about the logic of this argument."
Waring's finds are likely the result of pareidolia, a bizarre effect which causes the brain to see shapes, structures and patterns where they do not exist.
According to Nasa: "Pareidolia is the psychological phenomenon where people see recognisable shapes in clouds, rock formations, or otherwise unrelated objects or data.
"There are many examples of this phenomenon on Earth and in space."

LOL!.....I never realized I had so many friends.
Great explanation. I never knew that was a theory about why we tend to see significance in what are really just random arrangements.
I'd also heard that the climbing in trees thing is why we sometimes awake with a start when just falling asleep. It's the "falling" thing, like dozing in a tree and you begin to slip.
Not long ago someone posted on FB a photo of the Horseshoe Bend at Page AZ.
I was shocked to see from the angle they took the photo that it looked like a strange rock “face” in which two hollow areas looked like eyes, the the cracked surface like a nose, and the edge at the bottom a row of scraggly teeth.
The human mind is always seeing something “strange” in the normal.
Are you aware that Paul Hoagland (whomever that is) is not relevant?
You mad bro? You seem quite upset over something that is ridiculous? Dont you hate people that offer up their opinions on subject matter without even reading the source material (however pathetic they think it is) ?
Me too
Well, I sure as hell ain’t walkin’ around on Mars without a Slim Whitman recording...That’s fur gol’dang sure....
“Alien Expert”, how the hell do you get this title? I’m sure it has a lot more with selling books and getting your pie-hole in the newspaper than saying anything intelligent. If find it absolutely appalling that TV shows like Ancient Aliens and Ghost Hunters are in the “Documentaries” category of most media outlets. Bring one of them over to my house for coffee and donuts, then I’ll believe a damn thing this guy has to say about aliens. Until then, good luck with that!
And then an optics expert pointed out to him that he was seeing an image of his own retina. And it proves the point, people see what they want to see.
No joke. When I’m hiking, I see distant rocks that look like animals and other shapes all the time. It’s also common to see patterns in rock walls. Sure enough, when I actually get there, it looks like something totally else (usually nothing remarkable at all). The human eye and brain are very easy to fool. The face on Mars only looks like that when the sun is hitting at a certain angle. I’ve seen pictures of the same region with the sun hitting at a different angle and it looks like just a bare patch of sand with some rocks strewn around. It’s sometimes fun to look at stuff like that out in nature and see what appears as long as you keep your perspective about it.
When you see faces in random objects, think “human imagination” not “aliens”.
Yes, and even light marijuana use greatly accentuates that. Faces, birds, etc., everywhere. The pattern-recognition circuits of the brain go crazy, with enhanced functional connectivity, and the images grow more distinct as you concentrate on them. Even MJ users know these are not real, however.
Looks like an Imperial Storm Trooper helmet........
Also found ruins of a failed nightclub on Mars.
Totally lacking in atmosphere.
It looks like the “Rent is too d#mn high!” guy.
I heard that one two, about grabbing yourself in a falling dream.
Whats more pathetic? This guys assertions or this Media publication publishing it?
(Snicker, snicker)
Joshua Tree has rock formations that look like human skulls.
