DNR seismometer stolen off Rattlesnake Ridge

WAPATO, WA – On March 7, 2018, at 3:00 pm, the Department of Natural Resources reported that some of their seismograph equipment had been stolen from the Rattlesnake Ridge landslide area.

Seismologists arrived at the landslide area to check on their monitoring equipment. They noticed that parts of their equipment were missing. Some of the items missing were two 60W solar panels, and one Guralp 6TD seismograph worth approximately $12,000.00. The seismograph is about the size of a coffee can and it is useless to anyone who has stolen it.

The public is encouraged to contact the Sheriff’s Office if they see people or vehicles on the ridge. There is a section of Thorp Rd that is closed to the public with barriers. The ridge is posted with no trespassing signs and it is private property. The land is not stable and any rescue attempts unnecessarily endanger the lives of emergency workers. Please stay off the ridge.

Still following this story for updates. Very concerning, although it is in a sparsely populated area. Also watching earthquake activity in the area.

You have to watch out for those rattlesnakes. They’ll steal anything that’s not nailed down.

“The seismograph is about the size of a coffee can and it is useless to anyone who has stolen it..”

Unless you’re worried about Graboids.

Yes, we live not too far away and had been following that story several weeks ago. They showed the gap that was opening at that time and it sounded like it was a matter of days before the hillside was to let go. We thought with all this rain it was long gone. Surprised to hear that they’re still monitoring it.

Idiots - the instruments can’t be used for anything - according to the reports.

Perhaps they could sell them to Chumlee on PawnStars;)

If it’s worth $12,000, I would check ebay.

Stay safe Zarro.

Do you have to commute past the area? The excavation pit is still closed, right??

Instead of stealing it they should have given it a swift kick and sent the alarm bells ringing.

"...useless to anyone who has stolen it."

I could think of a couple of good uses for it.

The hillside is right outside of Union Gap and Yakima. Hardly sparsely populated. This was the work of crackheads...

I drive by it twice a day. Its behaving as was predicted by the original geologist before our POS governor got involved and got everyone spun up.

Tweakers will steal a red hot stove if they can figure a way to carry it...

I've got cure, but the DEA would go out of business within a month...

So, we paid $12,000 for it, but it’s worthless. Figures.
I catch trespassers with a pair of $40 trail cameras. Maybe they should have spent $12,040.
