Pope Francis wants to change line of 'Our Father'

Pope Francis has suggested he wants to make a change to The Lord's Prayer, widely known among the faithful as the “Our Father.”

Specifically, the Catholic leader said in an interview Wednesday he would prefer to adjust the phrase “lead us not into temptation,” saying that it too strongly suggested that God leads people to sin.

“That is not a good translation,” the pope said, according to Reuters.

The phrase “do not let us fall into temptation,” which the Catholic Church in France has previously decided to use, would be a more appropriate alternative, Francis said.

He added that the phrase used by the French, or similar wording, should then be implemented around the globe.

The prayer originated from Jesus’s language of Aramaic. It was then translated to ancient Greek, and later to Latin.

I think this is a translation issue and a lack of understanding grammar on the part of the pontiff.

on its face it is a request.

kind of like, have mercy on me.

Me too at the Vatican after he had recovered from his gunshot wounds. He looked like he was able to carry the weight of the world on his shoulders.

Why is this pope’s lapel pin a pentagram with an embossed goat’s head?

You know, as a Protestant disliker of Popes in general and THIS Pope especially....

I have no issue with this proposed change.

This story reminds me of the joke where an ad executive for KFC is tasked with convincing the pope to change the Our Father to say, “Give us this day our daily chicken.” The pope is outraged and throws him out, but he keeps returning with offers of more money, until the pope agrees. He calls the cardinals together and tells them he has good news and bad news. The good news is that they are going to be paid $100 million. The bad news is he is pretty sure they are going to lose the Wonder Bread account.

I believe there are quite a few nuances on the latin verb “induco” especially with all those complex Latin conjugations.

I have a been told a perfectly reasonable translation is also “let us not be drawn into temptation.”

Anyway, I don’t trust this Pope so anytime he wants to change anything basic (which seems to be everything he does) the hairs on my neck stand up.

“Lead us not into temptation” comes directly from the Latin vulgate of Matthew 6:13 as translated by, I believe, St Jerome. So the “Pater Noster” has been said this way since at least the late 300s. Leave it to the Jesuits to want to alter tradition for no reason (or do they despise Tradition for some reason?). Instead, how about getting the priests and bishops to teach what the “Our Father “ means? Anyway, does he also want to change the wording of Matthew 4:1: “Then Jesus was led by the spirit into the desert, to be tempted by the devil.”

Our OS who art in CPU, UNIX be thy name.
Thy programs run, thy syscalls done, in kernel as it is in user.
Give us this tick our timely thread
And forgive us our segment faults,
as we dispatch those who lock semaphores against us.
Lead us not into a deadly embrace,
but deliver us from core dumps.
For Thou art the boot partition, the scheduler, and the filesystem.
For never-ending round-robin.
Abend.

What was the first act of Jesus’ mission after baptism? He went into the wilderness and was tempted. Like Job we are all tested, but remember Satan’s argument to God about Job’s righteousness. He complained about God’s hedge of protection. Ironically this morning, I just prayed for that hedge to be put up around my son! (reading Let God Be God)

If we are following God, we sure can ask for that hedge and not to be lead into temptation. It’s hard! Does God do the tempting?

hmmm. I was also reading 2 Chronicles where the king of Judah, Uzziah, became proud from all the victories and blessings he received while following God’s ways that he took some idols from the booty and offered incense to them and THEN, even worse, went into the temple and offered incense to God. God got mad and he immediately got leprocy on his forehead. The priests told him not to do it and when he got the leprocy they got him out of there.

We are tempted when we are not acknowledging God but ourselves. We can go to hell following God, but our hearts must not become proud when we survive. We have to acknowledge Him in everything.

Changing the words may be good for those who think it is God who tempts us from the way it is written now because they do not know Him.

Did y’all know that the word “BREAD” is not really bread? It is ONLY found in the Lord’s prayer and may not mean our physical needs. I use the words “Give us this day our daily spiritual enlightenment” because the rest of the prayer is about our relationship with Him and others. Contextually the food thing doesn’t fit FOR ME. I can’t wait to not have to eat all the time and I hate cooking. I have low blood sugar and eating is a pain.

Anyway, I went to find the original Aramaic (love hearing the Hebrew so it was nice to hear the Aramaic) and also found a good study on the whole prayer.

[I for one still feel uncomfortable with updated version of the Nicene Creed and find myself reverting back to the old way.]

Yes, I still get screwed up every mass with that. I can’t understand why they would need to change it.

Well, as a Catholic liker of popes in general but disliker of this particular pope, I have to strongly disagree.

"Lead" has been in use in the English version since at least the time of Henry VIII. "Inducas" (induce/lead) has been in the Latin version for 1500+ years. And the Greek version which apparently has the equivalent of "lead" was in use from essentially the 1st century.

I have a real problem with this pope or any pope or any Christian for that matter looking at something this ancient and saying, "Ya know, this translation can't possibly be what Jesus meant. I can do better." It's the height of arrogance to think like that. The translation is what it is. Deal with it. Maybe it doesn't precisely comport with our understanding of theology, but so what? The same can be said of a fair amount of other stuff in the Bible. Leave it be.

Will “our father” be changed to “our indeterminate-sex parental object A”?

Will “give us this day our daily bread” be changed to “take away today dat rich White guy’s bread and be gibbin it to us”?
