1846

The Associated Press was formed in May 1846 by five daily newspapers in New York City

It occurs when one wakes up to the scam. A lot of people are awake now.

It’s for the ladies. Glor is easier to look at than Pelley.

Except that the Nixon/Kennedy debates were in 1960. 1963 was when Kennedy was assassinated. I am old enough to remember both events.

Hearst's "Yellow Journalism" about the turn of the 20th Century, but the shift of "Journalists" to promotion of Socialism and Cronkite's treason on Vietnam was when it started to destroy America.

Fake news has a long history in America.

Benjamin Franklin intentionally published stories alleging that the British paid Native Americans to scalp men, women and children in the rebellious colonies.

During the contentious election of 1800, Federalist newspapers tried to keep people from voting for Thomas Jefferson by running fake stories of his death.

“Nothing can now be believed which is seen in a newspaper. Truth itself becomes suspicious by being put into that polluted vehicle. The real extent of this state of misinformation is known only to those who are in situations to confront facts within their knowledge with the lies of the day.”

— Thomas Jefferson

Any time I have been familiar with behind-the-scenes information on a news event, I have been amazed at the reporting, and how much they got just flat wrong. I assume everything in the news works this way, now.

The leftist media hid the health and adultery of JFK... and even further back, FDR.

But the leftist media were also supporting the blunders of Woodrow Wilson and later his health (or lack of it).

When the OSS was disbanded in 1945, but people like William Paley, Walter Cronkite, Sarnoff, Herbert Marcuse and are all tied to the OSS and propaganda.

Operation Mockingbird was a secret campaign by the CIA to influence media. Begun in the 1950s, it was initially organized by Cord Meyer and Allen W. Dulles. At the Church hearings the Dir.of the CIA said there wasn’t a major news anchor they didn’t control.

Media has always been controlled by the oligarchs. The Kennedy’s sold their majority interest in RKO Pictures to the Rockefellers in the 1940s.

In the 1930s or before for the NYT or perhaps it was never reliable, though generally relied on.

The mainstream media has always been partisan, venal, and corrupt. Despite sanctimonious posturing over the years, a free press is a corruptible press, because the man who owns the printing press controls the news, and he always has his price.

It became clear to me during the Lewinsky scandal, although I had begun to wonder during the Reagan Presidency.

Walter Cronkite.

Vietnam.

Absolutely ... didn't recognize it at the time, but that's when it started ... no question.

The Kennedy/Nixon debates were models of fairness compared to Hillary/Trump.

In the 1930s we had Walter Duranty reporting breathlessly about the wonderfulness of life in the Soviet Union during the Ukrainian Famine that the Communists perpetrated on the peasants of the Breadbasket of Eurasia.Old Walt and the NYT just didn’t think knowing about all those deliberately starved and murdered people was appropriate given that the USSR was the glorious wave of the future of mankind. I suspect the reporting on the War Between the States was pretty one sided, too.
