Driving aggressively on dirt roads on a nice summer day up in the mountains near Hurricane Ridge in WA state in a rental Pontiac Fiero in the mid 1980s windows down sun roof open.
At least, not for her ;)
Great topic for us car guys. Keeping this response strictly to fun with THE CAR, I would have to say it was 8 years ago when I was a newly minted GC for a private company in Arizona. One day the owners told me the company wanted to buy me a car, “maybe one of those things with the rings on the front.” So, I located an off-lease Audi A-8L with a 4.2 v8 in Los Angeles. Flew in one morning, did the paperwork, and drove out before the 3:30 traffic jam. I spent the evening cruising I-10 through the Mohave and Sonoran deserts with a big smile on my face, listening to some cool tunes on Sirius and doing about 110 mph with the sunroof and windows open, looking at the starts, and thinking “How in the world did this happen to me?” I loved that car. As the months wore on I drove it all over that beautiful state, and loved every minute of it— the power, the stable ride at high speed, the incredible interior, all of it! My wife did too. But all good things come to an end.
At least, not for her ;)
And a bit of driving ability helps too. Something the Firebird driver lacked. :-)
The car chase sounds like a helluva story.
As for you Daily Driver, that car is a fun rocket. I have given though to acquiring one (including the Subaru-badged version). Your commute is a heckuva lock longer and more exciting than mine. Kudos to ya.
Winding road trip with the Corvette club through Indiana and Kentucky, for my age it was a hoot.
I tip my cap to you. Good show, sir. Good show.
I will say that if I still lived in Seattle, I wouldn’t own this car. I could not really take advantage of why it’s fun. I feel like I am living the dream of a lot of car enthusiasts that like shows such as Top Gear. I’m doing a “road test” that looks remarkably like the ones they do EVERY SINGLE WORKDAY.
Maybe that’s why I only get 10-15k out of most sets of tires. I’m on my 7th now. :)
Mid-1960s MGB, I can dig it. Your story brings to mind one of the very few things that I have ever coveted. :-)
Well, you are living the dream, and I applaud that.
Thumbs up.
Handling and skill bests false bravado. Good on ya. :-)
When I was stationed at Goose AB, Labrador, entertainment for the younger airmen was scarce. Ray Weidner had a 1958 Chevy station wagon, though, and the Labradorian woods were filled with logging trails. A half dozen or so of us would drive out into the woods and Ray would drive as fast as he could down the twisting trails while the rest of us clung to the outside of the car. The last man to hand on was the winner. In retrospect, pretty dangerous and I’m surprised no one got killed or seriously injured but at the time it was as good a thrill as it got.
In one?
Have to say my first wheelstand. In a Hemi 'Cuda.
I name all my cars. Her name was Sophia.
1988 BMW R100GS P-D in the hills of North Carolina. Scraped the paint off the undersides of the safety bars while keeping it rubber side down.
Back when I was a teenager, I had a 1970 Chrysler Newport and the timing chain was shot. My father didn’t want to fix it and I couldn’t afford to fix it, so we decided to scrap the car. We knew someone who owned a junk yard and he said he would take the car off my hands for a few bucks.
I brought the car to him on a Saturday morning. I noticed there were about 10 other cars sitting around and a bunch of people spray painting crap all over the cars. The owner gave me two cans of spray paint and told me to have at it. When I was done he asked me if I wanted to take it for one last drive. I drove the car around the junk yard. It was fun.
The owner hosted a demolition derby the following Friday night at the junk yard. My friends and I went. The winner of the derby was a 1970 Chrysler Newport.
