Back when I was a teenager, I had a 1970 Chrysler Newport and the timing chain was shot. My father didn’t want to fix it and I couldn’t afford to fix it, so we decided to scrap the car. We knew someone who owned a junk yard and he said he would take the car off my hands for a few bucks.
I brought the car to him on a Saturday morning. I noticed there were about 10 other cars sitting around and a bunch of people spray painting crap all over the cars. The owner gave me two cans of spray paint and told me to have at it. When I was done he asked me if I wanted to take it for one last drive. I drove the car around the junk yard. It was fun.
The owner hosted a demolition derby the following Friday night at the junk yard. My friends and I went. The winner of the derby was a 1970 Chrysler Newport.
Good story. I’m not surprised by the ending, though. Late ‘60s and early ‘70s full size Mopars are legendary demolition derby cars.
