After listening to the disheartened Charlottesville, Virginian, Police Chief press conference a few minutes ago...now I know why Democrat, Governor, Terry McAuliffe looked like he had been sentenced to the electric chair on Saturday afternoon.
IMHO, this cute little gig, set-up and planned by Democrat, McAuliffe and his buddy Mayor and assistant Mayor in Charlottesville did not go off as planned, because the police were setup to fail with the orders issued by the Governor and his two Mayors.
Results, three people murdered, multiple people injured while extreme Right wing & Left wing nutcases tried to kill each other, uncontrolled & contained by a faulty security police plan from the Gitgo. The McAuliffe game plan...destroy POTUS, Donald Trump. Lesson one...you cannot have a one sided riot...it takes two to TANGO!!!
Bottom line...the voters of Virginia should immediately fire, Democrat Governor Terry McAuliffe and his Democrat cohort low life buddies. My heartfelt feelings are with the families of the killed & wounded innocents and, with the heartbroken Police Chief who had no excuse or choice to refuse orders from McAuliffe & company, SAD days for Democracy, Equality, Freedom and the state of Virginia.
He (the police chief) basically said the police and the right wing protesters had an agreed upon a protest plan which failed immediately, allowing both the right wing & left wing nutcases to get at each other without a buffer zone between them....the severe violence broke out quickly. The Police were not in their riot gear, just regular uniforms. They withdrew to suit up into riot gear. They were then refused by the Governor and two mayors to use tear gas which only allowed for the riot to get worse. McAuliffe and the Mayors both knew that a small town like Charlottesville was ill equipped to handle this violent outburst. IMHO, McAullife felt he could hang the whole albatross around Trumps neck, blaming only the right wing extremist nutcases....but the left wing Democrat nutcase had other plans and goals...and we were off to the races of hate both groups. Results...innocents murdered and injured.

Believe it or not folks, this riot incident will get a fair, honest, truthful review from Attorney General Sessions and, FBI Director, Wray. I have faith that we will learn much about this McAuliffe caper that will leave egg on many of the faces of both Democrat Scum and Republican Establishment vermin.

The national guard was there. Not sure if they did much of anything to keep the various factions separated though.

I havent read many details except ground witnesses saying it was close to a house, then seemed to be looking for something in the woods

I believe that is the corner of 4th &Main. Main runs parallel to Water St. and is bricked over in this area. It serves as the hub of a pedestrian mall with shops.
From what I understand, after the car ramming, rioting broke out on Main St, and at this point, the cops came in and cleared out the area, My guess is that police line was formed after the homicide occurred, not before.

FWIW I completely agree with your take on the situation.
I read numerous unconfirmed reports that the cops deliberately herded the Unite the Right people into the crowd of Antifa thugs. If true that will hopefully come out and the person/persons responsible for that tactic will be revealed.
