Should Star Trek Sequels Return to the Prime Timeline?
Screen Rant ^ | June 20, 2017 | Andy L. Kubai

Posted on 06/21/2017 7:18:10 PM PDT by EveningStar

Star Trek has remained a ship somewhat adrift, especially since the prequel series Star Trek: Enterprise was canceled before its fifth season. When J.J. Abrams brought his kinetic, alternative timeline to life in 2009, the long-running saga received a shot in the arm. Since then, the franchise, now split between Paramount (film) and CBS (small screen), continues to seek out for the right vehicle to truly set the stars ablaze in the 21st century.

Star Trek Into Darkness and Beyond were both exciting and generally well-received entries but fell victim to diminishing returns at the box office when Beyond’s meager haul seemed to call into question the fiscal viability of a fourth entry in the Kelvin timeline. Nevertheless, the saga remains wildly popular, with CBS unveiling its first streaming endeavor, Star Trek: Discovery, at the end of September. Longtime franchise creative Nicholas Meyer (Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan), who’s involved with the latest show as a writer and producer, recently revealed a new project. Although he hasn’t disclosed the true nature of his undertaking, he did suggest that fans “can assume” it’s a feature film.

At this point, production on a fourth feature remains uncertain, at least according to Zachary Quinto (alternative Spock). Meyer could be exploring new avenues for the next Kelvin feature, but he may also be drafting a cinematic concept for the Prime timeline. Either way, is Star Trek ready to return to its classic continuity?

A Great TV moment from the 60's.

There are things I don’t like about the new “Abrahms-verse” ‘Trek.

But on the whole, I do like it. I like that it harkens back to the original series “vibe.” I like that the relationships between the characters are different but comfortably similar. I like that the universe is different, which opens things up again.

If New-Trek somehow shifted the standard timeline, it either becomes a slave to established canon (which makes it predictable and potentially ho-hum) or it risks trampling it, making the shift irrelevant.

Moreover, Anton Yeltsin (sic?) is no longer with us, which creates problems of how to handle Chekov. The new Star Trek: Beyond introduced a pretty cool alien character who could fill in for Chekov in the next movie. (Just say she went through “Starfleet OCS” between “Beyond” and the next film.)

Simply, if New ‘Trek is making money, don’t fix what ain’t broken. I notice no one is in any hurry to do a ‘Trek movie around any other crew!

I sometimes thing the world would be better off it “Star Trek” had lasted two seasons then disappeared.

And NBC would've gotten away with it if it weren't for those "meddling kids"

Another zombie-franchise is Star Wars. No one knew it then, but THE WORST line/plot twist was the revelation that Vader was Luke’s father. After that, the universe collapsed and it’s all (prequels and sequels) just a bunch of Skywalker Family bulls••t.

True, but I could watch 50 minutes of Jolene Blalock reading a phone book out loud.

Have to agree on that. Seriously considered mentioning T'Pol as a factor in my watching the show but I've been working on maintaining pure thoughts.

ST:Voyager has grown on me in the last few years. I once watched it only because 11 of 10 was on.

I see what you did there!
I also see a common theme in your comments...have you considered cultivating pure thoughts?

Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country was the second-best (after Wrath of Khan). You’re thinking of Star Trek V: The Final Frontier. That was the one most people disliked, about an entity claiming to be God telling Spock’s brother to hijack a starship and take it to him at the center of the universe.

The horrible movie directed by Shatner? It was a disaster.

Sulu as an aging, raging Queen harassing ensigns would draw train-wreck viewers.

Give me Axanar!!!!!

Yep, that had a lot of promise - now I'll be surprised if they succeed in publishing the script in the form of a comic book.

My apology. I thought I knew my Star Trek, but I’ll have to watch the Undiscovered Country. I’m not sure why I’ve never focused on that one. I thought Shatner wrote or directed one that was cheesy.

Will the new Star Trek show any cleavage as the old one?

And the short skirts. Yeoman Rand in her mini skirt always made my teen heart flutter.
But what was up with her hair? It was epic.

May I suggest Star Trek: Survivor.

Every episode, one officer is voted off the ship...to be marooned on a hostile planet.

The entire episode is catty scheming as officers maneuver to avoid being voted off the ship.

THAT I would watch.

Star Trek VI is different - a bit dark and brooding, with a lot of politically-charged images and dialogue. Like the end of the Cold War (set in space), but more than that. It's interwoven with issues of aging, betrayal, assassinations and conspiracy. It's even got a weaponized mind-meld scene. Oh, it makes better use of the supporting cast than most of the Trek films, too.

Anything with a Cold War theme to it should seem outdated by now, but with today's looney politics and those rascally Russians, this stuff is evergreen. ;-)
