SLINGERLANDS, N.Y. (NEWS10) Reports claim addicts have begun hurting their pets to get ahold of a pain killer given to pets with arthritis.
Veterinarians at The Animal Hospital in Slingerlands said they dont carry the drug Tramadol in-house because theyre worried addicts will use it for themselves instead of their pets.
The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration declared Tramadol a controlled substance three years ago. Since then, the commonly used pain medication for pets with arthritis became available only as a prescription at pharmacies.
Theres unfortunately always the risk of abuse with any of these medications, and its a sad reality we have to be aware of, veterinarian Lexi Becker said.

Could I please get a kitty, doggie and snake ping out on this one?
This makes my blood boil that people would do this to animals. I suddenly lost all empathy for junkies.
became available only as a prescription at pharmacies...
I had to it by prescription 11 years ago.
And the ironic part is tramadol is VERY weak and won’t touch a 2 or 300 mg roxy addiction.
My cat is sleeping on me right now.
Best buddy for many years while I was sick.
I’d put someone who hurt him in the hospital for a long, long time.
Spread the word that if they fake enough data, the vet will put them to sleep also, and that is a Really, Really Great high.
It should work.
For evidence, see: Michael Jackson, et.al.
I have a 15 year old border collie/chow mix that needs the NSAID deramaxx and tramadol every day. Without these drugs, I would have to euthanize her because she wouldn’t be able to walk. I sure hope drug addicts don’t ruin things for everybody as they are known to do.
That’s what I’m worried about. I’ve had cats on Diazepam. Recently ask if I could put my feral on it to calm his wild butt down just as temp measure but the vet said no. Am wondering if this is why?
We just put down our beloved 17-year old doxie on Sunday. The Tramadol prescribed to her wasn’t helping her pain. Not sure how much an addict would have to take to get anything out of it considering an 8 lb. dachshund wasn’t getting anything out of a quarter tab of the stuff.
I take Tramadol as needed (which is not very often - a prescription lasts me years). It is such a cheap generic it should not be that hard to get it legitimately. I sincerely doubt that a person who harms a pet in order to steal its pain medication is anything other than a waste of skin.
Somehow I just knew this story was from NYS. And it explains some squirrely stuff I’ve seen on my last two trips to my vet. My fur babies are in for a checkup next month. I’ll have to ask her if she’s seeing any of this...

The pain is still a garishly colored wild animal, glaring at me from across the room, teeth bared, ready to pounce. The doctor said I could have a morphine pump for the pain, I say with a whine in my voice I immediately hate. How pain can twist everything in your life. Im afraid we have only one on this service and your roommate has it, the nurse says with a hint of apology.
My roommate?
I turn my head to the right and there is a youngish guy in the other bed. He looks like a bum. His long, greasy, black hair tumbles over his pillow. He is thin, sallow, unshaven, mean-looking, with small, dark eyes that dart about the room apparently defending against something. His thin body is outlined in the sheet that covers him. He has small scars on his face and neck.
Hes here for drug detox again, says the nurse, still apologetic. And he has MY morphine pump?? I want to scream but somehow hold my tongue. My roommate was every nasty stereotype of the loser druggie who demands what he wants while giving back nothing other than hatred. Just as I am falling off to sleep a wheelchair arrives and I am taken down to Radiology. This is just as my last Percocets are wearing off, I realize with a jolt of panic. I am parked just outside Radiology and abandoned. The pain comes back, horrible and tearing. I start to cry with it.
For the next two days I am trapped in the same room with my raging druggie roommate, a miserable excuse for a human being who screams 24 hours a day at the staff. I want more morphine, you f****** assholes! Im leaving now unless you give me what I want! You f****** bitch! Get over here! Im leaving! Im calling Social Services! You cant treat me like this! I need MORE drugs! *brief episode of sobbing and self-pity* then Youre treatment SUCKS! You bastards! They give me better than this at the free clinic! (like hes paying for this hospital stay) Im calling my councilman! All this delivered non-stop in a sob-punctuated shriek while storming around the room with the morphine pump on a little trolley, following him around like a small dog on a leash running to keep up with its master. MY morphine pump. So the next two days pass horribly, a blur of my own pain and the torture this drugged-out POS is inflicting. I had never before thought much about drug addicts beyond a vague disapproval. By the end of the second day (and night) I want this one to die. Lifes like that. Get a big dose up close and youll be astonished how quickly your opinions change...
From "What I Saw After the Crash"
I’d like to give them a reason to need Tramadol. Subhumans.
My uncle was a hard scrabble farmer. Tough old cuss, practical and old school. If an animal was failing or seriously injured, or impaired, he would take care of it by putting it down. “Why?” I asked one hot and hard day of indentured servitude (I actually enjoyed many days of hard labor under his expert instruction). And he told me this... “because they are in pain and they don’t understand.” Right or wrong it is what you did back in the days of hard scrabble farming.
This is as much a push for government control as it is for anything else -— and is being pushed in most states right now. Faced with an opiod epidemic, politicians are grandstanding to force all forms of doctors, even DVM’s, to report every controlled substance prescription into a government database that tracks each individual patient’s use of all controlled substances. The reality is, the drugs are coming across the border and/or are being produced and sold by the billions by drug companies that are pushing and rewarding MD’s for prescribing them to all their patients.
People hurting their pets to get drugs is just one of their invented scenarios. It came up at a meeting here in Texas when LTC Allen West suggested he could take his bulldog to a few DVM’s on a Saturday and have a big party with the drugs that night. How offensive -— and totally wrong!!! Do they think we DVM’s are completely stupid???
So by the time I take a history, do an exam, x-ray, maybe bloodwork, ultrasound, and/or whatever else I might need to diagnose the problem, those dog-size-dose of pills is going to be pretty expensive. Plus, I’m not going to just treat an animal’s pain without fixing the injury -— clean, suture, wrap, splint, whatever it takes. I guess they think they can just wander in and say “my dog hurt his leg”, ask for tramadol, and then check out with pills in hand. Have you ever had that experience with ANY kind of doctor???
The problem is the pill producers and the pill doctors who push oxycodone, hydrocodone, and tramadol out like candy. I don’t think I ever go to the VA Hospital that they don’t offer me some -— which is probably why so many Veterans are homeless drug addicts out on the streets. And even the PA at the local clinic wanted to send me home on oxycodone for a muscle sprain last week for no good reason. It hurt bad enough that two aspirin or one tylenol took care of it just fine!!!
Can they also get spayed?
They’ll even call at night on emergency saying they need the drug for their animal’s pain and then deride one that we don’t care about their pets if we don’t prescribe it.
Skip the putting down part.
Adducts are sick in their soul. The evil they do is accounted to them in what Jesus said of ‘doing this tot he least’ ... though He is seen as referring to children, it is as applicable to the animals we are held responsible to protect. The Old Testament even gives proper methodology for humane killing of food animals!
I am heartily sorry for the loss of your beloved 17 year old doxie.
